I just measured mine, and each slot measures 15" in circumference (purchased item in 2/2014).

how much can you actually lift with these

depends on the people using them. My brother and I lifted a full office desk..approx 350lbs and awkward. We also handled an oak entertainment center about 6 feet long approx 225lbs and my son and I made quick work of a couple washing machines.
