works great off the side of our aluminum boat in the middle of the lake, we have a large Black Lab and he uses it very well. Sits about 8 to 10 inches below the water so the dog can get on. I would highly recommend this product for anyone with an aluminum boat and a large dog. Sure makes getting them in the boat a lot easier. Now if we could just teach our dog to shake before he gets in the boat.........

can i use this on my pontoon?

Probably not, it needs some way to mount to he hull or transom like an outboard motor to the stern/transom of a boat.

Ranger bass boat 185 vs - will it work on the ranger 185 vs 2004 model?

No idea for sure ! but it would work on about 95% of boats I have seen if unsure write down the specs/dimensions and go and have a play on your boat with it. I am very pleased with mine and I am happy to recommend it.
