Based on American rather than British English, this is among the first Russian dictionaries revised for the post-Soviet era. Includes new political terminology, new Russian institutions, new countries and republics and new city names. Contains 26,000 entries in the English-Russian section and 40,000 words in the Russian-English section. Irregularities in Russian declensions and conjugations appear at the beginning of each entry. Review: FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED, YOU NEED THIS DICTIONARY!! - This is such a great product. Do not worry about the time it was created, it still helps me translate new songs, YouTube videos, and the news. In the beginning, there is the case endings for nouns, adjectives, and a list of their exceptions. It teaches you a bit of Russian spelling rules and all you really need to know about verb conjugation (past, present, future. If there is ever a word with irregular case endings or verb conjugation, it will tell you on the specific definition of the word. Each verb will tell you the imperfective and perfective version, so you don't have to search it separately. Most adjectives will tell you if they are the short version or not, or if they are the predicate version. The words have accents on them to signify where the stress will be. Some words, especially prepositions, will have long definitions because they give you so many examples of how they can be used outside of what you would think. If words have a different literary definition/use, it will tell you. Lastly, the very back has the names of all places you can think of, both present and historic. It has the names of countries, of course, but also territories and geographical features such as famous rivers, mountains, seas, cities, etc. There are also the names of famous people. Whether you are A-1 or C-1, this will help you significantly in translating things like old Russian classic literature and learning the basic grammar of the language. Get this book today!!! Review: Great dictionary - I'm a beginner in Russian, but I've been a beginner for quite a while now. This dictionary is easy to use - sometimes I just read parts of it for fun, to try to expand my vocabulary. It has accent marks - a big help for beginners. I also like that it does not combine related words into a huge, single entry: it keeps separate words separate. It annotates entries' Genitive case, perfective/imperfective and plurals. It has multiple translations for many words, and often has exemplary phrases to show the different connotations. At the beginning are some rules and patterns for declensions and conjugations. At the end is a glossary of many proper nouns. One cool thing I like to do with this dictionary is look up new words I learn, in order to find other words with the same root or stem: this helps reinforce learning the original word, and also learn some additional, related words. On the con side: it is 'only' about 1000 pages, so it doesn't have every word in it (karma, saute), but you can try Google Translate for those (not that Google Translate is so great). It doesn't have a history of language changes from 1917.

Great Deal on a High-level Russian Dictionary
Just received this and opened the package. Perfect condition, unmarked, no signs of use . . . and I couldn't have asked for anything better. I've purchased from Thriftbooks in the past -- always with great results and to my total satisfaction. They came through once again. And the cost was amazing . . . thanx so much!!!!!

No vulgarity. How do you find a verb from an irregular stem?
It's pretty good and useful, but I have two problems. I just adopted two kids from Russia. They were using a word that sounded like a vulgarity that I know from spanish. I couldn't find it in the russian to english section. I looked it up in the english to russian section, and found that there was no vulgarity at all! I need to know the words. Being present in a dictionary doesn't mean you approve of using them. Look up the english word for the male sex organ, and you don't even find the russian word for it. The only thing this book gives would be literally translated back: "male sex organ" -- it does not even give the russian word. (I bet there is one.) Lots of verbs have irregular stems. If I have a conjugated verb and want to find out what it means in english, how am I supposed to do that? For example, ride. The infinitive is (something like) Ekhat. First person, "I ride", is "Ya edy". Look up "edy" and fail to find the word. Other prefixes are indexed. It should index irregular stems!

Great for ESL tutoring
I use this dictionary every week when I tutor a person from eastern Ukraine where Russian is spoken. This dictionary has been much more efficient in helping my student learn english words than using a translation app on phone, and it has most words that we need translated.

Great Dictionary
This is a great dictionary. In fact, my husband and I have had this dictionary for almost 10 years and stupidly I left it out in the rain a day or two ago. Needless to say, I placed an order for a replacement immediately through Amazon. I would not even consider another dictionary. I bought the Oxford Pocket Dictionary at a library sale for a buck or two that we keep in the car, and it is practically useless in my opinion. It just reaffirmed my high opinion of this dictionary. Katzner's dictionary is laid out well, offers phrases using many of the entries and is just indispensable for someone wanting to learn russian. In fact, a russian friend of ours said my russian was "unexpectedly rich" and thought maybe we had russian literature lying around the house. I totally give this dictionary credit. I hope my replacement arrives soon!

El producto en si es muy completo, no me acaba de hacer el peso el acabado del lomo del libro... Esta mal enganchado. El resto es impecable! Buena compra...

Concise, clear, and understandable
There must have been a long and in-depth analysis of the subject matter, and an excellent understanding of both languages. The amount of time and effort put into this dictionary must have been considerable and it is definitely worth the cost. I would highly recommend this edition to anyone studying either English or Russian.

The best.
A second copy bought for the future, when the one I am using now will be dismantled, and the last available copies of this unavoidable, excellent dictionary will be sold at absurd prices.

The Hefty Russian Dictionary
When I was learning Russian (I have had to stop because my goal was intimately linked to going to that country and due to geo-political circumstances, that is unlikely to be feasible in the forthcoming years), this book was helpful. It is a lovely book. I collect dictionaries from all over the world so have some established opinions about books and dictionaries. This may reflect that I was a very basic learner of Russian when I got this book: I could not find all words, even factoring in the declensions. I sometimes found myself having to go to a Russian declension website. It was weird and I never worked out why it was happening. But the book itself is well bound, excellent pica and font (in fact, it's quite aesthetic).
