It really does the job--easily
This inexpensive, dethatching machine is amazing. I’m so glad I bought it. It is very lightweight and easy to use; it pulls itself along. The amount of thatch that flows out the back amazing. It left a layer of loose thatch material about 2-3 inches think. I filled TWENTY 42-gallon bags with thatch. My lawn area is about ½ acre, likely a bit less. A few things I learned. -- Cut the grass a little lower than usual. This makes it easier to keep the machine moving through your lawn. -- Dethatch when there is some moisture in the ground—not real wet, not dry. I did it after a good rain. I don’t think the dethatcher could do a good job if the ground was dry and hard. -- It seemed a good idea to heed the manufacturer’s recommendation to use an extension cord of the proper wire gauge depending on length. (The manual says you can burn up the motor if the extension cord is not of sufficient wire gauge for the lengthy. I paid about $40 for 100 foot cord. I didn’t want to use more than one extension cord so the cords would not pull apart. The hook on the handle for looping the cord to keep it from disconnecting works perfectly. (I once used some hedge trimmers that were a constant headache because the plug would pull out repeatedly.) I thought the extension cord would make the job pretty difficult, but it really didn’t. You just learn to work in patterns that keep the cord out of the way. -- The bag is useless because it fills up in just a few minutes. My advice: Remove it. This machine had enough power that it never got bogged down. But in areas where the grass was a bit high, it was harder to keep it moving through the grass. (Otherwise, it was very easy.) It was easy to switch the dethatcher blade and scarifying blade. I scarified to rough up the ground for reseeding. Before I bought the Greenworks dethatcher, I tried dethatching with a hand rake. Even though it was a well-designed dethatching rake, I soon realized that if I did the whole yard it would take a very long time and leave my old back aching probably for years. So I bought the Greenworks dethatcher. The price was very reasonable. I doubt I could have rented a dethatcher for less. No negatives. (There is a battery version of this dethatcher, but it costs about three times as much.)

Save money on dethatching and spruce up your lawn
Love it! This is lightweight and works well. We take the grass catcher off and just let the dead grass trail behind, then follow up with a lawnmower/bagger. Really has made a big difference in our lawn. So much cheaper than hiring it done and really easy to use.

Works great, but be careful how aggressive you set it
Bought this after reading a lot of reviews and it definitely worked well for me. I mowed my grass pretty short beforehand and had several dead spots from dog urine. This thing pulled those areas up instantly. One thing to know: it removes a LOT of material, including some healthy grass if you go too aggressive. After dethatching, I top-dressed, seeded, and put hay down over the bare spots and the lawn recovered well. The quick-change blades are convenient, but the included Allen wrench barely fits, so be careful not to strip the bolt heads. Also, I found the collection bag almost pointless. It’s very small and fills up constantly. What worked best for me was dethatching first, then going back over everything with my regular mower and bagger, followed by a rake for the leftovers. Overall, very effective machine for the price and definitely made a noticeable difference in my lawn.

Why didn’t I buy this years ago?!?!?
Just used this for the first time. Early April in Wisconsin. Put it on setting 1 to clean up the dead grass from the winter and fluff everything up from being matted down under snow all winter. It did an amazing job. So much better than those dethatching units attached to riding lawn mowers - those things would rip the heck out of yard and it would take a month to recover. With this unit it does the work of getting up all the dead grass without ripping it up. This again was at level 1. Absolutely perfect. For the record- I have about 11,000 sq ft of grass and it took about 90 minutes of running the machine and another 1.5 to 2 hours to rake and bag the grass. But now my lawn is ready to go for Spring and looks 100% better.

Amazing. Worth every penny !
This machine is just plain amazing ! Mostly plastic that is very sturdy and well made. I just thatched 3/4 of a acre of grass lawn that was very heavily thick moss and had no problems. Lots of power. It produced over 8 cubic yards of moss/thatch (thats equal to a mid size dump truck load and 1,200 lbs of moss ,which is very light weight, at the scales). I went 2 passes over the lawn , picking up the debris with a bagged riding lawnmower (only way to go. no raking). Fast and easy. A Great value at a low price. The only con is the small catching bag. Don't use it. It fills up in less than a second !

Works great for smaller lawns
I bought this last year because, after 29 years, my lawn was in serious need of a geed dethatcher. Normally, I wouldn't even consider a corded or battery electric piece of outdoor power equipment, but since this is something I'll use maybe onve a year, and I have a small yard, I decided to give this a try. Even though my yard is small, there are parts of it that are way too away from an outlet to use a cord. So, I ended up using a portable generator to operate it. But, I already had the generator, and already maintain it, so this wasn't an additional expense. Regardless, it does a really good job of dethatching. I've not tried the scarifier blades, but after using the dethatcher blades, I initially thought I was too aggressive and removed too much, but by early June, my lawn looked better than when it was brand new. It's not the simplest of setups for my application, but it works great and all things considered, id call it a simple and economical solution for a homeowner that uses it once or twice a year.

Overall A Great Machine
Full transparency I almost didn't buy this product after reading some of the reviews about motors burning up, etc, etc. Unfortunately, last year's drought was terrible on my lawn it definitely needed help. After thinking it over for awhile I decided to give it a try out and see how it did. Standard disclaimer applies: Individual results may vary. From the top: 1) The product arrived in great shape and assembly was very simple. 2) I didn't bother to do any engineering calculations on current draw vs length of extension cord, etc. 3) I plugged it in to my 20 year old, 100 foot extension cord and it worked just fine. Pros Worked like a champ, de-thatched and scarified my lawn very nicely, completely pleased the job it did. Lightweight and easy to move around and use. I had no trouble with power supply and motor didn't burn up, but I suspect some situational awareness and common sense should be applied. As with gas lawnmowers it will lug down when the clippings accumulate under it. When it happened I would raise the front wheels and pull it backwards to clear the clippings. I used it for 2 hours on my front lawn with no difficulty. It's very simple to change from the dethatch blade to the scarifier blade with the hex key that is supplied it also has a holder that attaches to the handle to keep the hex key close by. Cons The controls seem to work backwards from every lawnmower I've owned since all the safety devices were installed. You have to depress the start button and then pull the "deadman" handle to get it to run unlike my lawnmower. Not a big thing but part of the learning curve. The poor reviews about the bag were correct it will fill up about 1/3 of the way and then needs to be dumped that equates to about 20 feet of dethatching. I removed the bag and raked.....a lot, but it ended up being faster than using the bag. This is why I gave it a overall 4 star rating. Overall I'm happy with my purchase and it did a great job of getting my lawn prepared for another Texas summer.

Fácil manejo, escarifica muy rápido.
Es muy buena, escarifica y recolecta en su bolsa… el único detalle es que se llena muy rápido, solo hay que vaciarla constante. Buena compra.

Great machine for price
it really works wonderful, easy to assemble, easy to use, light weight, and very efficient, I was hesitant however it proved to be a valuable tool for lawn maintenance, i would mention that the bag collection is a bit of a chore as it needs to be emptied often, as well I will mention that using it without will create a lot of raking afterwards as this machine is efficient in dethatching, i have not scarified as of yet, however if it works as well as it dethatches, i see no issues, defiantly recommend for DIY lawn care

Great little machine
Got this today, did front lawn and really pleased. Easy to put together, well made and sturdy. I can see what some were saying about bag, is way too small. Sooooo, I did the thatching with no bag and then used my lawn mower with bag to pick up debris. So combination worked well. Good idea to go one direction and then the other. My husband and I are in our eighties and pleased with this product.

Mixed bag - literally
Assembly was straightforward though the instructions are the absolute bare minimum but it’s fairly self evident how it’s supposed to be put together so I suppose the scant instructions isn’t too bad. It gives you no hints, tips, or suggested use of the two blades so ask a friend, or if you don’t have any, AI. ;) The machine itself is very plasticky but appears to be reasonable quality and it’s a jaunty shade of green. The wheels are shiny black wheels, big in the front tiny in the rear. Not that its looks have anything to do with how it performs, but overall it has a good design that doesn’t scream El Cheapo. It has a handy grab handle in the front so you can carry it more easily from place to place. It has limited handle adjustment and the obligatory safety button which must be depressed and then the green handle bar squeezed to use. I’d have rather a switch and then the squeeze bar to use but if it saves the big toe of some southern smooth brain, I guess it’s worth it. I should add It also has a cord holder that’s nifty but it’s plastic is so low quality it will not last with use and time. Raise the price by a nickel and upgrade the quality, manufacturer. There are three height adjustments and I used the tine only at this point (see photo of results). The tine hooks are metal but they look to be of a modest gauge and quality of steel - again, I can’t see them withstanding even medium use for the long term. The tine column is held in on one end with a vinyl/plastic bracket. I’d suggest lubricating that upon installation of the column. The columns are easy to change with the loosening of a single allen key bolt. You don’t need to fully remove the bolt to change as the vinyl “clip” which holds one end as the clip is hinged - again a nice design. The electric motor claims 13A which if accurate is a fairly mighty motor for 120v - it does indeed de thatch reasonably well but it doesn’t seem to be able to throw it as well into the rather small grass catcher which fills very quickly and doesn’t get to the back of the bag which again prevents better usage of the volume of the bag. The grass I used it on was dry and freshly cut and I wound up having to rake the cut thatch into small piles. It’s quiet, relative to a corded electric mower and easy to operate and light of weight. Overall, it’s a good value and works reasonably well for small to the occasional use on medium sized urban lawns though I took a star off balancing the disappointing bagging performance against the rest of the performance and the relatively low cost (this was at least $50ish less than a comparable model at a big box store). If you’re on the fence wait for it to go on sale.
