They seem to get absorbed into the bloodstream and have anti-inflammatory properties. Some of the herbal ingredients in this formula also have been shown to have a similar impact. My only issue with this formula is I don't like when companies combine enzymes like this with herbs. Many herbs are best taken with food to improve absorption and utilization. However, the enzymes must be taken on an empty stomach or else they will simply digest the food they are taken with rather than act in an anti-inflammatory way. This seems like a good formula but if you want the best impact of the enzymes, take on an empty stomach.
