If given the opportunity, mine would chew off the string in no time flat and then swallow it. My cat never had the opportunity because the toy would not keep running, another reason why you have to supervise. Every time it stopped which was just a few seconds, I had to open the battery compartment and close it to start it up again. The on/off switch wouldn't restart it. Cats loved it while it ran, but I sent it back because it wouldn't keep running. **Q: does it do what they say it does ?** A: Yes, it does.
