Surface Primer Color | Black Acrylic Primer 60 ml (2.02 fl.oz.) | Matte Finish and Fast Drying | Perfect for Airbrushing and Great Adhesion to Figurines and Scale Models

This is my go to primer. I use it for just about all my mini painting and fishing lure painting. It sprays really well through an airbrush if you thin it a bit. I do about 1:2 with Vallejo thinner. 1 part thinner to 2 parts primer. It sticks really well to most surfaces, though we are mostly using factory plastic minies or resin 3D prints. Fishing lures are factory plastic blanks, PLA 3D prints, or wood like balsa. The coverage is smooth and consistent. For colors I generally just use all brands of acrylics from cheap craft store stuff to expensive stuff and they all work really well with this primer.

Nice find! This Vallejo Surface Primer is a heavy-hitter in the model and figurine world. It’s the "gold standard" because the acrylic-polyurethane formula acts more like a high-tech "skin" than a heavy paint, specifically designed to shrink-wrap around 16K resin prints without burying microscopic details. This has been perfect for prepping my vases and figurines, provided you are using the correct delivery system. ​In my experience, the biggest mistake people make is trying to push this through a fine-detail needle. Because of the thicker polyurethane texture, I've learned you have to use a 0.5mm nozzle to get the flow right. I’ve been pairing it with a high-precision, large-bore nozzle—like the Blackhawk style—which specializes in moving these heavier "industrial" primers. Using this setup in my Vevor airbrush is the key to unlocking what this product can actually do. It allows the formula to atomize properly, laying down flat and smooth without the stuttering or "pebbly" dry-tip that ruins lesser primers. ​The high surface tension resists dripping and pulls the coat tight as it cures, drying down to a beautiful satin-matte finish that actually makes the fine details pop more than they did on raw resin. You only need two or three light, misty passes to get full opaque coverage. Because it goes on microns-thin, you don't have to worry about it "mudding up" deep carvings. Most importantly, it creates a slightly rubbery "tooth" on the surface that ensures your final art colors actually bond to the resin, giving you a professional, durable base that feels as high-end as the piece you're creating.

This product is actually insane. I am not normally someone to write glowing reviews, but this has been the best purchase I have made as a painter. I've tried rattlecans from basic primer, to game worshop, to army painter and never had as clean of an experience as with this. Put a couple drop in an airbrush and you will come out with a beautiful and even matte black as a canvas to work with. What makes this product crazier is even though it is made for the airbrush work perfectly well when applied with a brush, it is almost like magic how well it comes out and it actually saves you on paint! I have a large brush I generally use for priming when I am working and can't use an airbrush. With Vallejo Surface Primer you can put one drop of black on a wet pallet and is that will be enough to get through an entire miniature, what is really crazy about it is how thin it comes out, it never mucks up details or crevices even when I feel like I got too much on a brush. It feels like it is somehow noob-proof primer. I cannot recommend it enough. If every paint I purchased came out as cleanly and smoothly as this primer I would never have trouble painting again. Try it, you will not regret it.

This primer works great. Top coat adhesion was was impressive. I am using this on older plastic models. And final paint scheme is much better now. Would defently recommend.

I used to use a different brand in my airbrush, but Vallejo won me over. Easy to clean up. Great flow in my airbrush. Covers the models well and seems to cure to a nice paintable finish every time. Wonderful consistency, rarely clogs my air brush.

It covers well without filling in details. Took two coats to cover the plastic toy. Painting over it, however, didn't seem much different than painting directly on plastic. I admit, this is the first time I used a primer and may have missed a step, but I did have to put two coats of paint over the primer. I assumed it would only take one with a primer, but I could be wrong and expecting too much from it. Over all, it's a good primer and brushed on well.

After using Vallejo’s Gray primer for awhile, I saw a very good price on this black primer and decided to grab one. I’ve learned that, depending on the color of primer you use, you can really influence what happens with the base coat you eventually use over it. I wanted some black primer because I heard it really works well to add definition to metallic colors like steel, aluminum, chrome, etc. But I’ve discovered that I prefer it to the Gray version as it seems to be more forgiving of mistakes you might make while spraying, like letting your hand stop moving while airbrushing and you accumulate too much product in one area. And the final finish is nice and flat and smooth. I’ve tried several different settings on my compressor to find the best one for me, and I do thin it as well as add flow improver to the primer. I shoot it at around 30PSI and usually stay about 6-8 inches from the target. Seems to work well for me. You may have different results and may have to experiment to get the best results. Love this stuff and all of Vallejo’s products!

Good coverage, could use some thinning still if you are running air. Clean good after running the airbrush it clogs big time without a full strip clean.

Il primer in questione -Nero- fa parte della linea di base della Vallejo differenziandosi per alcuni, piccoli, aspetti. Difatti, le principali alternative offerte da Vallejo -per la linea aerografo- sono i Mecha e il Nero Glossy (Nero lucido). -Il primer MECHA è progettato per essere resistente ai graffi e all'usura -chiaramente in relazione al modellismo. In generale, le recensioni dei Primer Mecha sono molto positive e alcuni li prefereriscono per l'alta capacità di aderenza al modello. -Il primer Nero GLOSSY (nero brillante) è principalmente utilizzato per dare un fondo, appunto, lucido sul quale utilizzare una vernice metallizzata. Personalmente ho trovato questa procedura ottima con il cromo,l'argento, l'oro e il bronzo (sempre vallejo, ma varie linee), tenendo conto, però, che chiaramente il risultato sarà più scuro. - Il primer Nero di Base -ovvero, il prodotto in questione- è ottimo per tutti gli altri utilizzi nel modellismo statico. Mentre qualcuno tende a preferire comunque la linea mecha, devo dire che non ho avuto alcuna difficoltà nell'utilizzare questo prodotto sui miei modelli e la tenuta è ottima. Per tutte e tre le linee in questione, bisogna tener conto che questo primer NON è un riempitivo e che, come è ovvio, tende a lasciare parecchi residui nell'aerografo. Cosa normale, dato che stiamo parlando di un primer, quindi più denso, viscoso e "aderente" di una vernice normale. Può essere diluito con il thinner vallejo, ma in minima parte, per evitare di danneggiare le proprietà del prodotto. Assolutametne consigliato.
