Philips Norelco Shaver 9800, S9987/85

Had a Norelco shaver in the past, switched to another major name brand but VERY unhappy with the quality of their replacement blades, so I've switched back. So far I'm very happy with the shaver and I quickly learned to appreciate the different color light rings while I shave as they help me understand when I may be pressing the shaver against my skin too hard or not enough. The motor is VERY quiet and so far I've been achieving a good close shave with little effort and no razer burn. My problem area has always been just under the jaw line but I've had good luck getting the close shave I was hoping for. As others have noted, the size of the square rotary head part could be improved (should be narrower and rounder) as a guy can't see how close he may or may not be getting to other facial hair, and I have a mustache. I can work around that as long as the shaver continues to shave other areas well and the pop-up trimmer does its job. Rinsing the blades under water is super easy - the cleaning pod is a bit odd, but it works - just wish Norelco would have added the charging contacts to the pod so I didn't have to use a separate charging station. All in all, I am happy with the purchase - if my experiences change with this razer as I use it more, I will make an addendum to this review. Shaving is very personal since facial hair can be very different on different guys, but this razer is working for me! A cautionary note - the replacement cleaning cartridges shown in the Amazon ad for this razer has an incorrect product code number - I had to send mine back and had to reorder the correct ones. You may want to wait to order the cartridges until you receive the instruction book that comes with the razer - the correct product number is listed there.

01/21/26 Update - Warranty was directly through Philips. Registration was easy and the return was easy - complete process took approximately 30 days due to holidays and ground delivery (lithium battery). They provided prepaid label to send in the unit, 1 day after receiving the unit, they assessed and replaced it with a brand new unit - thank you Philips! Very nicely designed, cuts very close and smooth, noise is nominal (expected) and the head adjusts as advertised. Cleaning system is well designed and works very well. Initial unit durability not good = owned Aug 24 thru Dec 25; at 16 months into owning and the battery is bad (full charge @ 100%, then 2 minutes use and it is at 8%). Will be contacting the manufacturer as the Warranty is 2 years (extended to 5 when you register promptly, which I did not, my error - but they stand behind their product and 5 years is amazing). I will provide an update as I experience the warranty process. (see above Update)

Great shaver. I use this most every morning. My only complaint would be the closeness of the shave. The battery life is great, I've taken it on vacation a handful of times and never had to charge it more than once a week. It's convenient to take on trips, the blades have been great since I bought it. The waterproof feature is much appreciated. I hope that this will last me many more years.

This electric razor gives the best shave I have ever gotten from an electric. Very close, and not at all irritating. The trimmer function is not up to previous iterations of Norelco razors, continuing a slow deterioration in this function, even as the shaving function continues to get better. This is probably my eighth or higher Norelco shaver, and they shave better ever time. The trimmer is just the opposite. I had to buy a separate trimmer. It's annoying, because this is an expensive razor. In addition, I am not particularly fond of the cleansing system. The solution smells strongly, and there is no tight-fitting lid that is usable without taking the cartridge out of the cleaning station. When my first cartridge is too old, I might try to refill it with water with a bit of alcohol. Hopefully, it won't explode. But I won't buy another cartridge.

The last time I used an electric shaver was 20 years ago. That too was a Norelco shaver. (The cool skin lotion model if anyone is old enough to remember). As I grew into adult hood, I used razors and cartridges, and in recent years settled on Harry's since it was easy to subscribe to and high quality, and it forced the rest of the market like Gillette to bring down their prices since they no longer had a corner on the market. However, for some reason, my neck and under my neck and jaw were becoming more and more susceptible to razor burn. I tried different lotions but nothing seemed to help. For some reason I stumbled across using an electric razor as a possible solution to skin irritation. I was skeptical but I was also at my wits end and was sick of the irritation leaving me with a nasty covering of red pimple looking bumps which is embarrassing at 43 years old. The instructions with the shaver say that shaving with it dry even though it is usable as a wet shaver, even in the shower. I opted for the wet shave for the first time and lathered up with my normal sensitive skin shaving gel. That first shave was AMAZING! I have never had such a smooth shave in the last 20 years! The next shave I did two days later was dry and I will never do that again. It left me with all the irritations on my neck, under my jaw, and under my chin that I was experiencing before. For my third shave I picked up a highly rated after shave lotion (Nivea Men Post Shave Balm) and Burt's Bees Cooling shave Cream. I used the Burt's Bees shave cream with the electric shaver after I get out of the shower with a wet face. After the shave I use the Nivea lotion. This combination is stellar! I have never had such a smooth face following a shave and I am super impressed and no more irritations! Lastly, I have also tried shaving once in the shower with the shaver with no shaving cream or anything, just having my face wet. This works well also and didn't irritate me, so I think the key is to have your skin wet if your susceptible to irritations. However I like using the shave cream and the post shave lotion for the extra "coolness" and feeling it gives the skin.

I've been a blade shaver forever, so I bought this because I hate blade shaving. This shaver gives me a smooth shave, if not better than a blade shave. I highly recommend this shaver
