So I looked into ways that I could connect the speakers to the TV and realised I needed a mini amplifier, which I then started to research. I came across this Prozor amplifier and it seemed to have everything I needed. Very quick to hook up to the TV via optical cable and it also links very easily via Bluetooth to my phone. It sounds great with my existing pair of JBL monitor speakers and, in addition to meeting the initial objective of enhancing my new TV, I also have a new and convenient means of playing music from my phone through what is a decent sound system. I looked into the relative merits of connecting via optical or HDMI ARC - even though the latter is apparently superior, there aren't any budget amps available (sub-£100) with ARC input. I've found that the optical connection using the supplied cable is absolutely fine, especially for TV sound. In addition, the Bluetooth connection for my phone gives a very acceptable quality of sound for music.
