From Carhartt's size chart (38-40) is a medium and (40-42) a large. If you are somewhere seriously cold and need a lot of layers, you can order a size up, esp if the vest will be your outer wear. I have a 48 chest and the 2XL is plenty loose enough for me to layer under it. **Q: I love this vest but the zipper is it weak point.
