Does this router have to be hardwired to the main router if using it to extend coverage in the house?

This router may be sufficient to supply coverage to a fair-sized house, so using it to "extend coverage" may not be necessary. However: This router can be used in either router mode, or access point mode. It does not have a "repeater mode". (A repeater acts as an extension of your regular wireless router. It picks up the wireless signal and essentially acts as a wireless relay. Your device connects to the repeater, which forwards [via wireless] the signal to the main router.) So, you would either have to use it as a replacement router, or put it into "access point" mode. In access point mode, it must have a wired connection to the main router. It will then be broadcasting a different name on the wireless (a different SSID), and your wireless devices would connect to it. The network traffic then flows along the wire to the regular router. In this mode, the RJ45 connections on this TPLink router would act as a network switch, allowing wired devices to piggy-back on the wire directly to the router.
