The Rust-Oleum (with 9.2% copper napthanate) has 1% copper. And the Copper Green brand( at 10% copper napthanate) has 1.18% copper. Napthanate is essentially an acid and kills stuff instantly. The 'copper' technically a type of salt that's derived from the napthanate. The more copper napthanate 'salt' the deadlier (though even a small amount will kill life over time. Unlike table salt, these copper 'salts' won't readily wash away with water. They're non-water soluble and quickly crystallize in the pours of the wood, leaving a very long lasting protectorant against organic life forms (ants, wasps, termites and every kind of fungus). No matter how you do the math, within reason, the more of this stuff you apply the more salt will remain. The napthanate solution is super-fast drying... less than an hour (though it'll continue to out-gas for a week or more). On dry wood it's easy to get two and even three wet brush-strokes to soak-in from a single coating. So, using even the weakest solution (the Rust-Oleum) on dry wood might result in 3% or more of salt that got into the pours in one application. Wet wood would not absorb it deeply, but the salt would coat the surface (and crystalize into the topical pours) at a full 1%. The point is, even .5% of nathanate salt would kill anything that contacts it for a life time. Lastly, it seems like a lot of people want to get a lot of deep penetration. But, unless abrasion is an issue: such as foot traffic or trailer boards where loads will abrade the surface or wood rot may have already started, penetration is of minimal concern. It's like sprinkling cyanide granules on a hamburger versus mixing it in to the meat. It simply won't make a difference. **Q: Must you paint wood that's been treated with Tenino with an oil based primer? Can you then put a topcoat of water based paint? What paints are best?** A: No further treatment, primer or coating is necessary. If further coatings of additional paints, primers, etc., are desired for best results we must recommend the use of an oil base product. The hydrophobic properties of the carrier (inactive ingredients) may produce undesirable results if a water borne product is overlaid. **Q: Approx how much surface area can be treated with one gallon and can it be applied with a sprayer?** A: I used a gallon to build 8 4'x10'x10" raised garden beds. It covered about 160 sq ft. I used a paint brush to apply it to all surfaces that are in contact with the soil. I don't see why a sprayer wouldn't work, but it does create a strong green stain that probably wouldn't wash off. One year in the ground and no signs of rot. **Q: what does this look like aged on PT? any pics?** A: Assuming that by PT you are asking about pressure treated lumber the answer varies. Lumber pressure treated with copper naphthenate should have very little coloration variance after supplemental treatment with Tenino. This should be applicable to a lesser degree for most metallic copper based pressure treatment systems. I wore a respirator, nitrile gloves, long sleeves, and glasses for protection. I applied two coats with a four inch brush and used half a cup to cover a 16 square foot plank, which will contact the ground. Goes on easily, absorbs well. Colors the wood green, so easy to see where you have applied. Strong odor that diminishes daily.
