A pleasure to use
Soft, smooth, rich lines for drawing.

The best pencil I have tried.
These are the finest pencils I have used. I mark up sheet music which comes with frequent erasures. For my use I need a pencil that leaves clear dark markings, a controllable width, easy clear erasures and long point life. Although a bit pricier than most these pencils are worth every penny of it!

Best by far
I’m an artist that works in graphite. These are the absolutely the highest quality pencil I have ever used. They are soft and extremely easy to work with. When sharpened with the BlackWing sharpener, the point is long with a very sharp point. I have no need to ever try another graphite pencil!

USING LITTLE PRESSURE, THE PENCIL GLIDES OVER THE PAPER MAKING A GOOD DARK LINE
My mother introduced me to these pencils. She used them to keep score when she and her friends played bridge because it was easier to see the numbers or whatever. I got some for myself to use for drawing, and I love them. The soft lead gives a dark line and if you like to blend when shading it works well for that. I have trouble with getting writer's cramp too easily, but since you can draw or write using very little pressure it helps a lot with that. Since the lead is soft, you need to sharpen them frequently. A dozen pencils come in a very attractive box which you can stand on your desk or table. The pencils are rather expensive but well worth every penny.

these saved my everyday writing
I'm a person who loves writing by hand, but I have a pretty bad hand tremor, so writing has become quite difficult. my favorite pen for many years, a micron 05, really doesn't work for me anymore for lots of reasons. often I have to put some sort of sleeve on the writing instrument so that I can hold it, and a pen with a cap (like micron pens) must be undressed and redressed with the sleeve every time I close it. no good. however, recently I remembered how much I liked to write with a good pencil when I was learning to write chinese characters, and I (amazon to the rescue again) ordered these blackwing matte pencils. happy day!!! I can write comfortably with it, I can put a sleeve on it (and leave it on!), and best of all I can erase the many random excursions my hand makes while writing. the lead is perfect, hard enough to take a point when I want it, and soft enough to give some gradation in the line.for the first time in a long time I can sit down and work on my daily journal, my garden journal, my recipe journal. thank you thank you for these pencils!!!

Pencil Perfection
These pencils are fabulous! I use them everyday for taking notes. Only pencils I use as they write so smooth and dark.

These pencils are pretty neat.
Now I've heard SO much about these pencils from some of my art buddies, so I was going to go for the Pearl ones first due to it's balance between the softest and hardest lead, but I decided to buy these first for it being a natural 6B and I really love me some dark, sketchy lines.I absolutely LOVE these pencils and the fact that the lead is so soft. I could never find a pencil perfect for my sketching needs until I came across this one. I continually pull these babies out for my drawing class when we do gesture drawings because they leave such a wonderful look after I'm done. Not to mention that they glide so easily over the paper without any gross parts in the lead to stop it.I will say these are not perfect, however. The eraser is incredibly useless with this darker lead because it will never fully erase it. Not only that, but it's so dang small! I like that you can refill them, but by the time you actually might need to refill it, the pencil is half gone anyway if you use it consistently. The fact that it's a softer lead kills these pencils off quickly, so if you're finicky about your pencils going away too fast because perhaps they're expensive for you, then you should probably go for the 602s or Pearls instead.Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love these pencils with a passion and they bring my work out so much better than any ordinary mechanical pencil, but yeah—they don't last long unfortunately...

Nice pencils, great graphite
I've never been a pencil aficionado, finding that over time, graphite eventually streaks and smears all over the paper it's used on. These do the same, it's the nature of graphite. That being said, I heard about the Faber Blackwing, it's discontinuation, and how obsessed people were with it (selling for *stupid amounts of money* on eBay). Then I saw these Palomino Blackwing pencils, and heard they were supposed to be fairly close to the original. I figured I'd try them out, and see what all the fuss was about. While there's no rubberized coating to assist handling or comfort in grip, the graphite is one of the best I've ever used. It's super soft, so it wears faster than "normal" pencils, and makes a dark mark. The eraser is one of the vinyl type which won't damage your paper, unlike the (usually pink) rubber ones found on most pencils. The only criticism I can find with the pencils is with the eraser holder, or ferrule, in that while the eraser can be replaced completely, I believe they're intended also to be advanced in the holder to make more use of the piece before being replaced. The little metal strap that clips into the unique ferrule is smooth against the eraser, so if you advance the eraser it will just slide back in to the original position. I fixed this by driving a tiny sharp awl into the clip, creating a sharp hook on the inside, digging into the eraser. Now it holds no matter how I fix the eraser into the clip.Keeping a point on one of these will require constant maintenance. The graphite is extremely soft -- apparently the softest in the Blackwing family of pencils. There are other graphite hardness levels available. I have some Blackwing 602s arriving soon that are made of harder graphite that I'm looking forward to trying. I've also just found out about the Blackwing Pearl which is supposed to fall in between these two.I suppose artists will find these more useful than I do, but I do enjoy writing with them, and actually enjoy writing my usual task lists and project notes.
