They were made by three different manufacturers. I have kept all the bad ones and analyzed the failures. Three have had the electrical coil shorted out probably due to heat. These units must use high temperature coil wire to survive in the engine compartment. The solenoid is sealed so you can't access the coil directly but the resistance drops when they fail and that has been the case in half of them. The others have mechanical failures in the housing. The shaft fails to slide easily enough due to corrosion or dirt. There are two different designs and neither design seems to last for a long time. Modern vehicles do not use this design since it is not reliable. I keep a spare in my boat along with the allen wrench. As soon as I suspect trouble I swap it out and it only takes a few minutes. Three years is the longest any have lasted.You will know when it fails. The engine will not idle or will idle very rough but will run smooth above idle speed. These units can fail and then start working again so change it at the first sign of trouble. If changing the IAC doesn't fix the problem. Change the crank position sensor and the MAP sensor. If that doesn't work change the rotor and distributor cap.
