Or do they extend beyond the 22" allowed on many airlines?** A: The bag I received measured 21 x 14 x 9 (unpacked, wheels to handles). Packed it would be slightly deeper than 9" (perhaps 10" up to 13", if extended ). Delta Airlines allows carry-on size of "approximately 22 x 14 x 9." Approximately means approximately. An inch probably won't make a lot of difference. Other airlines vary in carry-on requirements. Southwest, for example, allows 24 x 16 x 10. All aircraft overheads are not created equal, however. If the airline is concerned, they will measure, and if it doesn't meet the overhead allowance for that aircraft, will normally allow you to check you bag (usually for free) at the boarding gate; you will pick it up at baggage claim. If the airplane is full, overhead space will be tight and airlines will typically ask people to check carry-ons at the gate whenever possible.
