The strongest tomahawk for under $100!
Intro: This is probably the most durable tomahawk you will ever find on a budget. Out of all the tomahawks I've owned, this one is my favorite so far. I've literally beaten the crap out of this thing over, and over again and it just keeps going! I've managed to chop through many full sized trees with it too (not an ideal tool for the job, but a little determination can go a long way). Steel: This tool is one solid piece of steel, which makes it nearly indestructible! On top of that, it is made from 8 mm thick 1070 high carbon steel. This was a very nice touch - You get a balance of durability and edge retention. Through my comparisons with 1055 carbon steel, this one is much better suited for chopping. As of now, I've only seen one significant nick in the edge about 1mm in size (from who knows what). I would recommend wiping this down with oil if it ever gets wet; carbon steel has a tendency to rust. However, I have not noticed any rust stains from regular use. Edge/spike: The edge is more of a utilitarian edge, meant for breeching - Very strong, but not as sharp as most tomahawks. The weight/edge shape is very good for splitting smaller logs for kindling. It could be honed to meet the needs of other tasks, but that's up to you. Also, the spike is very nice, and similar to the Vietnam tomahawk. It's not sharpened at all, but the geometry is well suited for busting concrete. Grip: The grip is Kraton, which I've seen used on SOG knives and other tactical styled blades. It's held up well under the rough conditions I've put it through, but I would prefer something else that looks nicer. Also, there are about three ergonomic griping positons on the handle, which also allow for a two handed grip. Both Kraton slabs can be removed for cleaning once the 8 screws are removed. Personally, I wrapped mine with a layer of 550 paracord. This ensures I have a solid grip, and no shock transfer from the handle. Conclusion: This tool is absolutely amazing! It feels like a hatchet and looks like a tomahawk. Not only can you chop wood, you can break concrete, bust through doors, dig a fire pit, use it as a climbing aid in the woods, and fight with it as a last resort. The amount of power you can achieve from a single swing will destroy just about anything it hits. If you think you can handle the weight, I would highly recommend this tool!

A Breaching/Demolition/Destroying TโHawk
First, ask yourself what you want this tโhawk for? I see some folks complaining, โtoo heavy to carry.โ If you are looking for an axe/hatchet for camping/backpacking/canoeing, there are better options out there. I would suggest a folding Sven Saw (less than a pound), and a stout camp knife for batoning wood. Leave the axe/hatchet for when youโre taking the mule train. Sven Saw uses less energy, and is quiet, too. It doesnโt attract Big Foot, like chopping wood ; ) Sven Saw is safer to use in wilderness when far from an emergency room. Think cooking/camping fire; not timber logging. I keep an axe in the truck for blow-downs, and such, but thatโs an axe, not a tโhawk. Still want a hatchet for the woods? Fiskars 7850 is a light weight woodsman hatchet, and gets good reviews. Both Sven Saw, and Fiskars 7850 are available on Amazon.com. If you plan on using this as a tactical/defensive weapon, I suggest you get some martial arts training, or at least study Cold Steelโs DVDs on the subject. When you raise up to swing a tโhawk in an overhand swing you can leave yourself vulnerable to counter attack. Unless youโre into counting coups, or some crazy stuff, there are probably better weapons, and lighter/faster tโhawks made for that purpose. โEvasion?โ If I had a good knife Iโd probably lose the โhawk to reduce weight and travel fast. I do keep a short handled tโhawk in the truck for a different, โE,โ โEscape.โ I donโt trust the glass breakers on knives, or, that I wonโt slice an artery using them, if I ever go in the drink and have to escape from my vehicle. I will admit that a rock collectorโs/geologistโs rock hammer would probably work just as well. This tโhawk may be a little long for escape, and getting a full swing from inside a vehicle. Check with your local laws about carrying a tโhawk in the cab of your vehicle. I think the best use of this โhawk is for the first, โE,โ โExtraction.โ This would make short work of breaching glass, doors, locks, door frames, etc. This would be great in combo with a good pry bar. Nice, long, full tang, one piece handle. The 1070 tool steel should be tough enough to handle what you throw at it, and is one of the better steels I have seen S&W Knives use on its tools. This tโhawk seems more suitable for breaching/demolition; not a blade to send wood chips flying, like a felling/woodsman axe. But, it could be pressed into service for light bush craft duties if the need arose. S&W 671 E&E Tomahawk is a great โhawk to keep in the truck in case you come upon an accident scene where folks are trapped inside their vehicle, or trapped by rising flood waters, or your neighbors are away, their house is on fire, and you can hear the dog scratching at the door trying to escape. Keep one in the basement in case you get trapped by tornado debris. This is a purpose designed tomahawk, and appears well made for its purpose. Full tang, no weak points, such as handle attachment. Like your Scoutmaster always said, โBe Prepared Scout.โ

Axe is excellent. Sheath not great though.
The axe itself is very robust and solid. It should stand up to just about anything you ask it to do. It's fairly heavy so bare that in mind if you plan to carry it in a pack. It's a great tool for exactly what they built it for which is an entry or extraction tool. It can be used as a simple camp axe, but it's not going to chop through wood as well, mostly due to the edge profile on it. However, the edge is more designed to cut through sheet metal like on vehicle bodies, or commercial building type entry doors and not chip out like a straight profile for chopping wood. You could just change the blade profile with a sharpening puck easy enough if you would prefer to have an extremely heavy duty camp axe however. The sheath is the only reason I gave this product 4 stars. It's barely useful. The axe can very easily unsnap the retention buttons and fall out, if you tried carrying it on your belt or outside of your pack. A more useful and durable kydex sheath would be more practical for it. I am making one for mine since I haven't seen one made commercially for it. Other than that, it's well worth the money in my opinion for keeping in a vehicle for emergencies, or keeping with your bug out bag.

Top-Notch Product
This is a top-notch, SOLID piece of well-designed equipment. It is NOT a toy or for screwing around on the weekend. NOT a camp axe--but in answer to the other reviews which say that it is "too heavy to carry:" you need to get off the couch and do some pushups or shoulder raises. Same to those who say it is "too heavy" in terms of swinging/deployability: do some physical exercise. The grips are cushioned and comfortable--if you think your hand is going to "slip," buy a glove. The handle offers 3 positions so you can "choke up" if need be. Not a "light combat 'hawk" but, really folks, you aren't Hawkeye, and this isn't "Last of the Mohicans." Which, honestly, makes this axe the best option vs. its competitors' priced from $200-$500--come on guys, really? Stop living in that fantasy world. Sharp out of the box--not shaving sharp, but meat cleaver sharp. This is the perfect tool to breach car doors, car windows, residential doors, pretty much anything you want to breach. The 1070 steel is TOUGH as nails. In a pinch, you could use it for CQC, but I would say unreservedly that you would need to PRACTICE with it A LOT to get used to the feel prior to your self-defense experiment because, if you don't, you'll hurt yourself just as much as the other party. Again, this is NOT a toy. Throwing? Uh--why? NONE of my training/experience has ever led me to believe that throwing away your weapon is a clever course of action. This is the best item of its kind out there, and the price point cannot be beaten.

Boss zombie chopper and versatile tool
Holy crap, man. I bought this thing on impulse after turning 18, and I never expected to ever get any use out of it. It weighs about 3 pounds, 95% of which is spring steel, and this thing is indestructible. Great at clearing brush, can take down a 4 inch diameter tree in a matter of a few powerful, well aimed swings. Just for s***s and giggles, I threw it at a dead elm in my backyard, and it got stuck, spike first. I thought this was the end of my new toy, but after kicking the handle, it popped out of the tree virtually unscathed. (This definitively isn't weighted for throwing, so I wouldn't recommend it.) I am confident it will hold up to any foreseeable abuse and last for my lifetime. Just be careful when swinging either end over-head, catching yourself in the back with that spike isn't a treat. My only bitch about it is the sheath that it comes in. Its a little too tight fitting and isn't nearly as well made as the tomahawk itself.

This Tool and Amazon Rock!
First, Amazon is a lesson in customer service. When the item failed to show well after expected date, Amazon sent a replacement that I received the next day. Customer Service. This item is EXACTLY as advertised. Definitely not a toy. Heavy, solid, quality tool. It is designed to do a job and I have no doubt it will do it well. The only negative (as expressed elsewhere) - the blade cover is useless. No way you could carry on your belt securely. It is very difficult to even get all the snaps connected - the blade has to set in one particular spot for this to happen. I would never trust it to stay closed while moving about. But the weapon/tool is fantastic and well worth the investment.

Solid piece. not for extended carry.
As mentioned by some this is one heavy solid piece of metal. Too heavy for a go bag, or hiking. This is better suited to keeping in my truck along with my other emergency gear. The reason I gave it 3 stars are that the handles are terrible on this. They aren't flush with the back and front on the tang. This makes for a very uncomfortable grip. In this day and age of.computer machinery you would think this would be a simple problem to fix. I would just wrap it with paracord like I did. I haven't put it through any testing yet, but it is solid and would be good if you had to open up anything from a wall to a car. If your looking for something to put on a go bag and like me would rather not spend $400-$500 on some of the high end Hawks (this really doesn't qualify as a hawk) go for the CRKT Kangee. That extra $300--$400 buys a lot of extra ammo and gear. Overall a solid piece once you replace or wrap the handles. unlike some other reviewers mine arrived very sharp. I think they need to up their QC since there seems to be some inconsistencies in their manufacturing.

An Excellent Tool
Entry/Exit tool. Think steel doors and cinder block walls, cement, heavy plywood, even pry bar in an emergency. NOT so much for camping or hiking or throwin or cqc. This is a heavy dangerous tool. It is sharp on both ends and it will cut you and puncture you if you are careless. I bought this for getting into places and getting out of places. that's its purpose and so far I love it. I did paracord the handle for a heftier grip, the stock grips are just a little thin for me even with my gloves on. I'd recommend this for anyone needing a beefy breaching tool but not for those wanting a combat hawk or a throwing hawk It's a tool, not a toy. Also, for brand snobs, this is made by Taylor Tool. The same ppl who make Shrade and Uncle Henry. don't buy it because it says S&W on it. Most S&W knives and such are made by Taylor Tools and are marginal quality in some cases. The secret it to know your materials and to buy products with the quality materials and design that fit the needs of the job. This is one solid piece of 3/8 inch 1070HC steel. it will break but not easily. UPDATED 1/4/16 I discovered a beautifully finished steel under the coating. I goofed up removing it and was left with some serious scratches. I used a 400 grit, which works well as a starting point on my 1095 knives, should have used a stripper and 1600 (max) grit. I can remove the scratches over time, I think. My idiocity aside, there is a beautiful piece of steel under the coating.

Happy with the distribution of weight and quality of the ...
For some reason felt the need to purchase both this and a katana, getting ready for camping season, much to the ire of my girlfriend. The katana didn't come, but this product did. Happy with the distribution of weight and quality of the product, and how much it angers my girlfriend when combined with unfunny zombie jokes. 5/5, would purchase again, unless my girlfriend sees this review.

Good solid product
This is the only Tomahawk on the market that I am aware of that is one solid piece of metal. I had bought another brand for my son that broke in what I would consider normal use. It is heavier than others however I am sure that it will last.
