Elena Ferrante certainly knows how to write a page turner! She also has the knack of creating very memorable yet highly unpredictable characters. I’m not sure quite how credible Zia Vittoria is in this tale, but Zia manages to unleash a whole range of emotions in those she comes into contact with, something she does by being obstinately herself. The central character, Giovanna, has to navigate through some very choppy waters on her way to establishing anything resembling that kind of identity, and of course the reader shares her uncertainties and self-questioning along the way.
