They look like they are hard but they feel like gummy bears. The loop goes around the middle toe and they form fit in the crack. Do not take up any room in your shoe. The loop does not interfere with any other toes. You don't even know it is there. Make sure it is flat on the bottom in the crack when you put on your socks. My toes have flattened, not "hammered" up. Pressure is off. I have been wearing them everyday for a month and I see no wear and tear. I like them very much.Update:I bought these 3 times, 7 months apart. So this is 21 months from original review. I only ordered new because I thought it was just "time" to get new, not because anything was wrong with them. The first 2 were as I described in my original review. This last one was horrible. Not the same at all!! The loop was flimsy and they ripped within a few weeks. I understand why the reviews have such a wide range from 1-star to 5-star.
