Great Greek adventure. Fast moving and full of energy. Good factual basis which gave a greater understanding of of the Persian and Greek conflicts.

Always worth reading Conn Iggulden work not his best but explains Athens way of life in a way that was easy to follow will finish series’s if there is another book

Conn Iggulden is always to be relied on for bringing history to life, and this book is no exception. I am very familiar with the background, having read Herodotus as part of my classical studies, and there is no subsititute for going directly to the great master for a most easy and enjoyable read about everything that he ever came across during his life, as well as a detailed account of the Persian Wars. Conn brings it to life also, but in a diferent way, by providing all the dialogue that Herodotus omits (being a historian, not a novelist). Of course, he takes a few liberties with the facts as they are actually known from contemporary sources, but this is entirely legitimate in a fictionalised re-telling. We cannot now know everything that happened back then, and Conn provides a plausible explanation for some of the things about which we do not now the specific detail. He's also good at recreating a society and a political landscape which is utterly different from ours, and yet formed the basis of the democracy (well, oligarchy except for the three weeks before a general election!) in which we live today. If the Persians had won, absolutely nothing whatsoever would have been the same as it is now - that's a powerful thought worth reading about.

Conn covers events from this period well. The book was well written and presented the history accurately. I noted some bad reviews about the book along with Gates of Athens, complaints that not enough happened regarding battles from so called lovers of historical fiction. Conn does a great job of presenting the history very well and help me understand events surrounding that period, the people, politics, religion, geography, etc, which is what history is about. It’s not just battles and gore, and if that’s all your looking for your not really into history, even if it is written in a fictional style. I have never read a bad book by Conn yet, cannot wait to read the next release. Would recommend these books to all who have a real love of history, they really do bring events from that period to life.

I love books by Conn Iggulden. His take on historical fiction captivates you and takes you into the people not just the time. A big fan of ancient Greek this book and the one before brought new light onto a well trodden path and did well not to dwell on Thermopylae as so many others do but actually focus on the other heroes of that time.

Enjoyable read. I love historical fiction and I believe Conn iggulden is the best author for this genre.

Yet another Master Class from the excellent Wordsmith Conn Iggulden. You can smell the sea and taste the figs as Greece once again goes head to head with the mighty Persian Empire. Whether the Persians would have done any worse in ruling our western democracy is a mute point now. Iggulden sets the scene for the great battles that shaped our civilisation. The Spartan war machine is as always in these mighty tussle an important ingredient. But Iggulden gives the crafty Athenians a big part in the Titanic land and see battles that ensue. I loved this book and would heartily recommend it.

My bookshelf groans under the weight of Conn's output. He rarely puts a foot wrong and he has written in detail about the danger facing Athens around the years of 479BC. He sticks mainly to the historical facts, but he does compress the years. Themistocles did suffer as a politician, but he knew how to survive under another regime for at least 10 years.

Better than the first book in the series - really enjoying it. The first book is good too and needs to be read before this one. Iggulden is one of my favourite authors.

An excellent book, mixing history and story telling. I believe that’s Mr. Iggulden’s style. A great way to realize, learn and have fun about how people lived back in those days.

Learned about Persian, Spartian and Athena history, in the most enjoyable way.

Good value -lots of data on how things worked back then. The beginnings of Athenian democracy. Pity we don’t have the exile system here for those I shall not name.
