how well does the signal go through walls? can I sit on my couch and drink beer while the smoker does the work outside in the snow?

Signal its ok. Not 500ft but enough to seat on the sofa at ease. But be careful with probe calibration. Mine went off 20f after 2nd use

Not even remotely - I was using mine to monitor an ice bath - it fell into the ice bath for <1 second and now is entirely dysfunctional.
