What does huge or big mean anyway?

*by B***E on Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2017*

These wedges worked as advertised. I bought 2 sets of these as they looked the same as the other 3 sets of "MAYMII 9/16" Wedges I bought earlier. This deal you get 7 vs only 5 of the MAYMII. Let me say both these work and seem to be lasting the same, but the MAYMII wedges are a little thicker metal. I have been splitting 4 huge rocks so I can expand my vegetable garden and not have rocks to hit with the tiller and take up 100 sq ft of space. What does huge or big mean? For my instance huge means I am making "small" pieces of the rocks that are around 400lbs or less. The reason for 4 stars is that the rubber bands do break (on both sets 4 total out of 29). They are still usable just take more effort to set in the holes and you now have 3 small pieces falling when the rock splits. 9/16" is also a pain in that drill bits of that size isn't available in stores in my area. I have been using 1/2" and make sure they are drilled deep and that the wedges are set straight and even, but 9/16" work better.ADVICE and thoughts: Order more bits than you think you will need 4 didn't cut it for me. I now have 15 (I use around 24 wedges per split and have drilled over 1000 holes). Also keep the holes drilled straight and keep the holes spaced 3-4 inches apart. I pushed them wider since I only had 15 wedges and it didn't split the rock and I ordered 2 sets of these wedges to finish the split and as noted above I'm averaging 24 or so wedges per split. I also have chisels and crow bar I use to finish splits and remove the wedges. Lastly, I found that splits go better if the rock isn't still buried in the ground to add pressure to hold the rock together.

These absolutely work! Used on large lava rocks

*by S***E on Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2018*

I live in Hawaii on the Big island. I have a yard full of large lava rock boulders. I was told that I would have to get a large piece of heavy equipment with a hydraulic jack hammer attachment, I BIG jack hammer attachment. Lava rock, even with some 'bubbles' in it is really hard.Sledge hammers, and a large $500 Bosch demolition hammer have a hard time with this rock.I bought 2 sets of these, and have used them to split boulders 2-3 feet in diameter. I'm sure I could go bigger. The split is not always 'clean' but I'm sure I'll get better with practice. I've never had a boulder not crack.I use a very long 9/16 carbide drill, 20" or so. and I always go through the rock if I can. Holes are spaced 3-4 inches apart in a straight line.Place the shims perpendicular to the line, so as to form the crack on the line. Light taps to start. Then a bit harder. NEVER give these a hard hit. It's not needed. Go in sequence, like tightening lug nuts, or head bolts.Patience. Listen to the sound of the wedge as it's hit. Listen for the sound of cracking. It takes me 3-8 minutes to split a boulder, once the shims are placed. It's unbelievable how effective these are.One issue to be aware of. Its' very easy to lose parts 'down the hole'. This is not an issue with this particular brand, but rather with the overall design. I remove my shims after the rock has a good size crack. Use Pliers, and a crowbar to 'open' the crack a bit to pull out the shims. One or 2 shims will get locked in place by the crack wanting to close up.I am buying more of these, because I know that I will occasional lose a piece. and I don't want to be without these tools.

    Man vs. Granite. Man wins!

*by H***F on Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2019*

These is a great product for removing large granite rocks. First time out, I was able to break a 1000lb rock into six pieces in about 3 hours. Follow the instructions - I used a 1/2" drill bit, 4" depth, 4" apart, two strong taps on each wedge, tap in sequence back and forth. The moment when the rock splits is bliss.
