The surface is large enough and there is a lip at the lower end near the presenter which can be raised to a height of 1 cm (about 3/8th of an inch) which prevents the laptop falling off. I use my laptop on it frequently and really like this podium. **Q: Is the shelf deep enough to hold my laptop? I need to run my document camera through my computer.** A: The top shelf would hold a laptop, however, the middle shelf is rather narrow (about 8 inches wide) and I wouldn't recommend putting a laptop there. **Q: Is this strong enough to use for note taking while also holding a college textbook?** A: Yes. The lectern is strong enough to hold the weight of a fairly heavy textbook. The surface area allows for both a textbook and a legal-sized note pad, although the textbook may have to extend over the side a few inches. And you can lean on the lectern while taking notes, if you wish! **Q: Is it easy to adjust the height of the lectern? Can it be done relatively quickly?** A: It's actually pretty hard to change the height. "Adjustable" is a misnomer. When you put the whole thing together you can choose the height you want it to be...but when it is all put together, taking it apart to change the height requires laying it on the floor, and taking the entire back off with tools. Then you have to completely take out all the top screws (don't loose them!), - it took two people to then pull on the top to make it higher,,,then re-line up the holes and put the screws in and the the metal back onto it.
