Have to turn off the unit. This seems like a foam that melts the dirt off the coils. We put a cloth rag under the unit to catch dripping. Don't turn on until dry. I was so impressed with the results I tried using it on a cpu heatsink, it worked like a champ on the fins and got the dust and nicotine residue right off the fins. Foams up and expands which is key to a good coil cleaner. Won't eat up the metal or cause leaks even if you don't rinse it. Good price and is my goto item for easy cleanup and getting the A/C back to cooling well.
