Crown Race Setting Tool, 3PCS Fork Installer for 28.6 mm Steerer

Having used this only once, on a 1 1/8" headset, I'm very pleased. The parts that touch the crown race are nicely machined and finished; the slide tube is a bit rougher, but it does not have to be precise. The tube seems to be heavy enough to be used as a slide hammer, but I just smacked it with a mallet and it worked well. A previous reviewer seems to have been a bit confused about how to use the tool. For 1 1/8 headsets (straight steerer) you just use the single driver piece and the slide tube, as shown in the first photo. For 1 1/2" headsets, you put the two driver pieces together ( they only fit one way, and are held together by an o-ring) and the slide tube, as shown in the second photo. Note that the size markings on the driver pieces read right side up when you're using the tool correctly.

I recently bought a Salsa Timberjack and decided the stock Rockshox Psylo Silver RC suspension fork was hot garbage and I wanted to upgrade. As a new trail rider, I'd never done a fork swap before and was looking forward to the process. The Timberjack has a standard 1.5-inch to 1.25-inch tapered headtube. This tool worked perfectly to set the crown race on the new Marzzochi Bomber Z1 fork I installed. As a matter of fact, the hardest part of the whole process wasn't the crown race, it was getting the star nut properly installed on the new head tube. It got a little hairy, but I managed to work it out. For under $20, I can't complain; it works and now I have a tool I will definitely need again in the future.

I've set two crown races with it so far, each taking less than 10 seconds. It's nice and heavy so it only takes a couple taps. The piece that sits over the race is super smooth, so no worries of gouging. All in all, we'll worth it over the pvc pipe if you are building a tool collection.

That would be fine, except that I didn't have a two-inch PVC pipe just sitting around the house. If you do, use it, and move on with your life. In my case, I had scored last year's Fox Factory MTB fork model on heavy discount, and didn't want to screw up the installation of the crown race doing something dumb with a half-brained home remedy. So I forked over (pun intended) $20.99 for the CALIDAKA Crown Race Setting Tool. It took longer to get it out of the Amazon bag than it did to install the crown race. Super easy to use, and the crown race was mounted snugly at the bottom of the steerer tube nice and straight. That's great, and I'll probably never use it again. But I'll put it in the bike toolbox and have it to loan out to friendly folks in the neighborhood. My only complaint is that it is on the pricey sicde for what amounts to one short section of pipe and one short aluminum bar. Don't regret buying it, as it was needed.
