Can i rig it to work for my stern-drive Volvo penta?

With a Stern drive you can just lock the outboard motor straight and then use the helm as a rudder... no need to connect...one issue you might have is the power steering will not work without the main engine running

what is the thread count ?

Not sure on the count, but i can tell you it is fine threaded

how is this item attached

It has ball studs that bolt to both motors. The rod has quick release fittings that snap onto the balls of the studs.

I need to know if this will hold up to salt water, this is a must for me, I only use in the ocean. If there is another recommended let me know

This is not stainless steel, expect 1-2 years in saltwater to be safe. If you coat it after it is fit ( enamel/ Marine paint) it will last much longer.
