In Clay Lab for Kids , art teacher and winner of the Netflix bake-off show Nailed It! Cassie Stephens presents 52 hands-on projects made with kid-friendly clays that get kids working creatively and thinking three-dimensionally. Squishy, colorful, and infinitely shapable, clay just might be the most versatile art material for kids. Author-artist-teacher Cassie Stephens has created all-new clay projects for kids of all skill levels . Start with the basics of rolling , coiling , and pinching pots , and move up to making "Jurassic fossils," animal marionettes, monster magnets, and boxes with secret compartments. All of the projects use kid-friendly, no-kiln clay (air-dry, homemade, and polymer) and water-based paints , perfect for home and classroom, plus there's an entire chapter of recipes for mixing up inexpensive homemade clays in the kitchen. When creating with clay, kids are introduced to a wide range of cognitive and manual skills : they'll work three-dimensionally ; make figurative models; use their imaginations in making jewelry and toys; design with color; and decorate with paints. The popular Lab for Kids series features a growing list of books that share hands-on activities and projects on a wide host of topics , including art, astronomy, bugs, geology, math, and even how to create your own circusโall authored by established experts in their fields. Each lab contains a complete materials list , clear step-by-step photographs of the process, as well as finished samples . The labs can be used as singular projects or as part of a yearlong curriculum of experiential learning. The activities are open-ended, designed to be explored over and over, often with different results. Geared toward being taught or guided by adults, they are enriching for a range of ages and skill levels. Gain firsthand knowledge on your favorite topic with Lab for Kids. Review: Kids love it! Easy for a 7 year old to follow. - We use this for Homeschool and we love it. It has so many great projects! It goes great with Torchlight curriculum. We combine it with our history lessons. We love it so much we bought it several times as gifts. Review: From an art teacher's perspective - I am an art teacher in a teeny tiny private school. I will never have access to a kiln (no space nor funding) and was becoming very discouraged with all the cool sculpting projects that required traditional clay and a kiln, knowing that my students would never get to take part in that experience. Thank you Cassie Stephens for this idea filled and detailed book specifically geared towards air dried and oven dried clay. This is a game changer and am excited to test these out next quarter! Amazing!

Great book from a super fun author!
I preordered this book and received it this summer to start planning for my art classes this year. In December I used the recipe for "Simple No-Cook Clay", Lab 41. Mixed up a batch with 12 different classes, first grade through high school. The kids helped measure, add, and mix ingredients. Then we used the clay to make "Stamped Clay Ornaments", Lab 42. They turned out great! Lots of fun and the step by step instructions with photos make it easy. Next, we're making a "Miniature Cactus Garden" from Lab 16 with terra cotta air dry clay!

Coming from a High School Art Teacher
I teach at a High School that offers sculpture classes, without a kiln (What?) I was looking for introductory air-dry clay projects that would fit in budget, while also looking for brandname solutions What I did Find: 1) There are a TON of easy to modify projects for high school or middle school :Although this book is made for elementary- and it SHOWS, with a little bit of brain power you can easily adapt these projects for older kiddos. I thought about 10/50 would be adaptable, but I found that at least 35/50 would easily adapt to high school 2) Reviews of different clays: I loved how the projects were separated by medium (kiln clay, paper clay, air dry clay etc.) rather than age. 3) Brands: She does drop the names of brands of clay that she uses, and that's so helpful! She also included recipes to make your own clay- which would be such a fun activity for older students or younger students! What I didn't find: 1) Routines: I wanted to find out HOW she ran the classroom, along with storage solutions, and set up! I didn't get too much of that from this book Overall this was a great book- and a very easy read for art teachers, or people just wanting to make some clay projects!

Detailed but outdated crafts
I got this for my 7 year old sister for Christmas. Image 1 is just a size comparison of the book, it's a good size and really good quality paper. The cover is in between paperback and hardcover. I found the book to be just ok, the instructions are detailed however I found a lot of the crafts to be "outdated", if you will. I included images of some of the crafts they offer. I think this book would be more ideal for teachers/school crafts.
