**Q: Does the  jar have to be full  to use these?**
A: Yes.  The pressure of the lid forces the cup down against contents and keeps contents submerged.  Works great.  For jars that aren’t full, I use glass weights on top of contents.

**Q: Re: finely ground carrots.  Can this product keep them submerged?**
A: I can say that my second jar of fermented cabbage had a lot of grated carrot in it and I didn't have any problen.

**Q: Can these be sterilized for future use?**
A: Yes but chemically (Clorox solution) not boiling water.

**Q: What specific type of plastic are the cups made of?**
A: It’s a food grade plastic, not sure of the chemical makeup up of them.

What I can tell you is that they are sturdy and great in 1 gallon jars as that’s all I’ve used them in so far.
