Superior 18V Drill! This is the one to buy folks!
I have been waiting for this drill to be available and I am so glad I waited for this model! After using this drill now for over 4 months I have to say, this is finest cordless drill I have used in the 18V Brushless line of drills! As always with Makita, the fit and finish is just outstanding! The build quality and overall ergonomics is way better than any other brand and feels so great in your hand! This drill has an all steel gear and drive housing for excellent strength and durability. It has an excellent ratcheting chuck with no bit wobble that I could tell what's so ever. These Makita chucks holds the bits extremely well and don't come loose at all. The brushless motor can put out some serious torque and seems to run forever on these lithium 2.0 batteries. I can tell this new brushless technology is a big improvement in power, weight, temperature, and run time! Overall, the Makita XFD12R is the best 18V drill on the market, hands down! I highly recommend this drill, you will not be disappointed!

Lightweight but powerful
We ordered this to use with scrub pads that clean the inside of our glass shower surround. It is battery operated and light enough that I can use it without wrist strain. Makita tools are high quality as is reflected in the price. There is an LED light that helps with visibility in corners or darker spaces. Be cautious as it is a powerful drill and must not be used by children or dropped in water.

Excellent cordless drill
Amazing how far have cordless tools come, and the Makita XFD12R is a great example. Compared to my 15 year old Makita cordless drill, only similarity is the color scheme, but performance is so much better, better battery life faster charging, more compact size and better power. Well worth the upgrade.

So Far a Great Drill With One Exception
Drill works great. Good battery life, good power and torque. The only issue I have found is that the rotation direction switch is a little sloppy and sticks out enough to easily get in the way. The result is my finger easily hits it and keeps the drill from operating. I have to constantly keep the button pushed in position to use the drill. Pretty annoying. Aside from that, and a case that is not conducive to holding accessories, drill bits, etc., I am happy with the drill.

Top-quality tool and case
After years of buying the light-duty/bargain power tools, I finally decided to get a top-quality cordless drill, with a sturdy case. There are many good choices if one reads enough reviews, and my choice of the Makita really resulted from the excellent reviews as well as my friends' recommendations, as they make their living with these tools. I just got tired of wobbly chucks, weak motors, and banged up tools that had only a canvas bag or no case at all. I decided that price would be secondary, so I may have saved a couple of bucks if I drove into town and shopped about - but this kit came to me in 2 days, right to my front door. I shared a battery in about 3 hours. I then put this drill to work later that day, driving several 3 inch screws into 2x4's to repair a pair of corral doors. Zipped them right in, no strain at all. I was done in no time. It sits in its sturdy hard case, ready to go whenever I need.

Can't drive a screw in straight due to Wobbly chuck
The problem is when you try to drive a screw. The tip of the Phillips head insert makes a small circle, and the screw therefore makes an even bigger circle. Impossible to drive a screw straight. I sent the drill to the Makita Repair Center in Buford Georgia, and they claimed there was nothing wrong with it. I had in-depth discussions with a Manager in Buford to ascertain whether I was installing the bit correctly or anything else I could be doing wrong. I'm not doing anything wrong. I've had cordless drills for 30 years and have never seen this before. Apparently its a common problem with a lot of cordless drillls now as they are made cheaper and cheaper. I purchased the drill from Amazon, but the 90 day return time had passed before I opened the box. Thats why I sent it to the repair center. And yes, I changed bits to make sure it was true. On the advice of the Makita manager, I purchased Makita Impact XPS bits. They were the most untrue of all. So now I'm stuck with a worthless drill. I'm about to purchase a Reciprocating saw and a Circular saw. You can bet they won't be Makita. And they won't come from Amazon. EDIT: I've noticed that the vast majority of negative reviews by customers having the same problem have been deleted.
