Unique book. Covers a lot of history that is not easily found elsewhere. Made a wonderful gift with Volume 2.

Great read

This first volume of a two volume set is not only a great "coffee table" book, but a very valuable resource and encyclopedia on the subject of American crawler and wheel dozers. It covers the machines of Allis-Chalmers, Case, and Caterpillar. The large format (11-1/2" x 12") book begins with a introduction, then launches into the development of the crawler trator and bulldozer in Chapter One. Of course, Holt and Best are mentioned. The transition from gasoline power to diesel is covered, along with other innovations along the way, such as blades by different manufactureres. An overview, by decades, chronicles the developments in power and size of the machines alongside the world developments that spurred the advances. The following chapters focus on the manufacturers, giving a overview of the condensed history of each company. Each manufacturer's machines are covered by decade. The accompanying pictures are excellent, many in full color. There are also manufacturer's literature and specifications, with cutaway illustrations included as well. Captions below the pictures name the machine, followed by brief specifications. There is also an abundance of action shots. The last section of the book is dedicated to appendices that list the tractor models by manufacturer, years built, weight and horsepower. I highly recommend this book on the basis of its well-written style, excellent information, and superb pictures. It is definitely a book worth having in the collection of any heavy equipment fan. I am anxiously awaiting the second volume. Excellent work!!

being a bulldozer and loader nut I was very much looking forward to this book, What I can say is this is an amazing book, very impressed with the photos and old ads this itself makes this a gem of a book have just ordered vol 2
