Strange Question. I don't notice any smell. The cleaning cloth included with the cases has no smell.I have been using the cases for the last 5 months.

Are the cases made from metal?

No. They are very hand shelled with a very strong spring. I have had no problems with either case. I carry then in my pants pocket ever day.
