Can this be connected to an iPhone? I would like to make recordings with a phone app.

Yes it can with some adapters, as long as your iPhone has a 3.5mm headphone/mic input. Wildtronics sells a cell phone adapter on their website or you can source your own. Note that this model has three channels. One is the parabolic microphone output and the two others are the stereo pair microphones. A cell phone is typically only one channel and not stereo for their mic input jacks. You might consider a dedicated handheld recorder such as a Tascam DR-05 or Zoom H-1 for an alternative that would produce better results than using a cell phone.

Is this the same as a listening device recorder

This is a microphone that doesn't have a direct way to connect headphones nor does it include a recorder. If you want to directly connect headphones, look at our AMPLIFIED models that have a built-in preamp that you can directly connect headphones to. To record using a microphone, you should learn more about basic audio recording elsewhere.

How far can it hear?

There is no exact value we can place on that. If you need a model with direct headphone output, see our Amplified Models. How far depends on a combination of distance, how loud the subject is, how noisy the general area is, whether the subject is a bird or human, and how much you expect to be able to hear the subject under those conditions. Here are some ideas of what to expect: birds can typically be heard and recorded with clarity in the 10-100 meter range, some louder birds, much further. Parabolic microphones don't amplify human speech frequencies as much, so we tell people typically if you, with your naked ears, can tell someone is talking, but can't make out what they are saying, with our parabolic microphone, you would be able to clearly hear what they are saying. If you can only see that they are moving their lips and can't hear anything, that is too far. Our units have the best range and lowest noise of any other parabolic microphone available.
