I am trying to get a better idea of the grain size. Can you describe better so I know which one to buy?

The grain size is about 2.4-4.7mm

Can this be used in a countertop home water distiller as a replacement for the carbon filter?

No, because it would have particulates. We use it in a whole-house filtration system that has other filters, which filter out the particulates.

How many cubic feet is 5 lbs of the 4x8 Mesh?

27.5 lb is 1 cubic foot so 5 lb is technically 0.18 cf
