Generic 10 in 1 USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader Writer

I bought 5 of these based on the price. I wanted a few of them and at a buck a pop the price couldn't be beat. I've used them with SDHCs and have had no problems.I keep one in my pocket at all times for quickly reading pics from my camera SD cards. I also keep one in my camera bag, laptop bag, and at my desks at home and work.The one that I keep in my pocket gets plenty of wear from me moving around, taking it in and out of my pocket, and me constantly taking the caps on and off. The only complaint I have is the cap started to fit a little loosely and slipping off on occasion. I eventually ended up taking the caps off both ends and just carrying it around loose. The USB connector bends a little bit but still connects and works fine.Here's the ultimate test: I forgot to take it from my pants pocket one day and it went through the wash (along with one of my high-end SD cards!). Fortunately, I found both before they went through the dryer! I let them dry for a day and then tried them out. Both worked fine! :DI'm writing this review just before buying another 5.

My Kodak camera has an SD card to hold the memory. I can't plug my SD into the computer normally. They wanted me to hook up my camera to the computer w/ a USB cable from my camera to the computer. It then opens up the "helpful" software that the camera comes with so I can upload them to my PC and be able to use a bunch of other useless, not working features. The Kodak "Easy" Share software is a bit annoying and slow. Plus, it always crashes and requires administrative privileges. Using this makes uploading my photos so much easier. Now, I don't mind using my camera. The device is extremely simple and works perfectly. I am so happy I bought it. It's also built pretty strong (worked fine after I dropped it). At <$2, this thing is a steal! I would strongly recommend it!

I ordered this to use on an older Windows 98SE system. Although the description here doesn't mention Win98, the description on other sites says it will work. The reader came in a plain non-padded, paper envelope and was wrapped in a small plastic bag with a self-stick flap. This was from BestDealUSA. Other sites show a clamshell package. There was no documentation or drivers included, not even a link to the company website.I plugged it in, Windows immediately detected it, searched for drivers, said it couldn't find any and aborted. The card reader didn't work. I tracked down the company who made it and contacted them. They insisted that no drivers were needed, even for Windows 98SE and that the reason it didn't work was that I didn't have USB 2.0. Basically they accused me of not knowing what I was doing.I finally got it to work by browsing the list of drivers manually and installing a generic USB flash drive driver. However, I'm not sure if that was provided my Windows, or if it was there because of the drivers for the flash drive that I tried to install. Regardless, Windows was incapable of finding it automatically.Once the driver was installed, I had no problems copying large files in excess of 300MB to and from a Traveler 4GB SDHC card.As for the card reader itself; It's a bit bulky, making it impossible to plug into many recessed front-panel USB ports. It will also block adjacent ports from being used. The plastic body is made from brittle, transparent plastic, which will crack easily. The cap for the USB connector seems to fit fairly snugly, however the cap for the back comes off easily. I solved this problem by putting a small drop of super glue on the underside of each of the two little tabs that the cap slides over and letting it dry. This increases the thickness and makes the cap a tighter fit. The super glue will turn the plastic cloudy, so if you care about how it looks, only put it on the underside. Make sure that the glue is completely dry before you try putting the cap on.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this device but so far it has worked perfectly. I'm actually using for a much different purpose then most people: as external storage on a modded asus broadband router (running openwrt). If I had one complaint, not that there's much the designers of the device could do about it, it's that it takes up too much space to the point you may not be able to plug in USB devices to nearby USB ports. To get around this I've been using a short USB extension cable. Oh, and the router (RT-NT16 if that matters) recognizes the device with no issues.I'm still a little unclear on where the "10 in 1" part comes in but I guess I'm not as into memory cards as some people. I am actually using this device in combination with 16gig/etc. SD cards in place of USB thumb drives.Since there's a deal-of-the-day on 16 gig SD cards today I figured I'd would buy a another one these and then I saw the price and...well I decided to get two because why not? Wow, these things are cheap. Hopefully they don't destroy any SD cards as some users have reported.I have mainly used this unit with micro sd card-to-SD card adapters and again have had no issues. I did try to use it with a memory stick but it doesn't work (MMC doesn't refer to memory stick, which I think should have been obvious). There's a similar device from sony that should fulfill that requirement. Though it like pretty much any other device is going to cost more than this one.So in conclusion in the few weeks I've had this I haven't had any issues but when you pay this little I suppose you roll the dice.
