Starfrit Apple Peeler, Spring-Loaded, Apple Corer Included

We'll be buying more of these "Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler with bonus core slicer" -- it works immediately and always, ideally for apples and I can partially peel small potatoes, which is fine for us, should we need the rare peeled potato (instead of my cast-iron, red color, vacuum base,horizontal-operation product). I'll buy this for my 20-something relatives, for sure. I struggled with my cast-iron type, you know the one, it gets tons of publicity, the peel/core/slice -- never could get it to not-destroy our expensive firm apples, and just as hopeless with potato (my talented husband threw the iron one in the trash he was so mad...he builds and operates and fixes many many things in this world! I got it out of the trash bin since I may be able to wind knitting yarn with it if my yarn ball winder ever breaks, ha ha!). This great little Starfrit 93013 is inexpensive, and the bit of time to use the included separate corer is trivial (compared to the 'we're having applesauce and mashed potato' and wasted time/money with your destroyed produce from the 'other type of peeler'). It even worked perfectly with some apples that were a bit past their very-firm stage. Big not huge/small/or not-perfectly-spherical, apple; ok with small un-knobby potato. The smallest 'new potato' is probably too small, but I will try them when they're in season. The Starfrit's blade properly "floats" therefore does not chew up the fruit. The blade automatically finishes out-of-the-way for when you remove the produce from the four prongs. The thoughtful design has the blade perfectly oriented so as to push against the fruit (not drag that blunt steel U-shaped thing along and ravage the fruit as my 'other type' does). It peels right up to the central axis of the apple, so any peel left there is cored away. You turn the handle away from yourself . And you do get that lonnng peel. I just ran into the kitchen and tried it with my left hand turning the handle...just turn toward yourself, and it works perfectly. It has four suction-y feet and you will need to place your other hand at the middle to further stabilize it a bit, but it truly isn't a big effort. My DH adds that if you don't have the use of two hands, just duct tape it to the countertop, since the forces are not huge or anything. If they used iron or steel for the housing, it would cost a lot more, so I'm totally okay with the plastic. I love this Starfrit device. I bake lots of apple pies, you'll be a better happier cook and eat better, surely, with this little machine. The kids can see the gearing as it works; but is not a toy, for sure. It is a good ol' sharp blade, so I would think children about 10 and younger, or klutzy/distracted youngsters should not use it, or just very closely supervise your young cook. And I would *much* rather buy a few blades --it includes an extra with a cover on it-- than endure the total failure of the more pricey iron 'traditional' type. It's easy to rinse off and I found no way for juice or water to enter the housing...I rinsed vigorously and used the sprayer, no water got inside; it is well made. If you know a cook or want a fresh apple pie, this Starfrit 93013 as a little gift may seem funny at first, but get one anyway... ...unless you really like peeling with a little veggie peeler, then a corer, then a chef's knife to get the slices you need, over and over and over! This is a long review bec it's such a great non-pro-kitchen peeler and I felt so stupid for buying that other type. BTW, for making great pie crust without lard...do a search for vodka pie crust. Yep. (Unless ya hafta totally eschew alcohol, of course). Because now that you can peel apples easily, you can pay more attention to the crust and, yummmm, puddddinnnng fillings with blueberries or cranberries.

I absolutely love this apple peeler. It does a great job of peeling apples REALLY quickly and with minimal effort. You just spin the handle and the blade moves across the apple, peeling it in seconds. The peels are pretty wide and very thin, taking very little of the inner apple with the peel. Because of the multiple vertical prongs that hold the apples in place, all you have to do is plunk them down on them and it stays put. You don't need to apply any pressure to the machine which makes it really easy to use. This is fairly small for a peeling device, which makes it really easy to store and also pretty portable if you need to take it on a trip. You can pop the handle off to make it more square, and both the cutting blade and the apple-holding prongs have plastic covers for safe storage. I recently took this on a camping trip to make some crockpot apples for dessert one night. This machine peels the apples so quickly and efficiently and is super mesmerizing to watch. The people I was camping with were all super impressed with it, and I think I got more comments about how cool the peeler was than on the actual dessert I made. I peeled over fifty apples in probably about fifteen minutes. We also tried a pear but it didn't work well... the pear was super soft, and this device needs a firmer cored fruit to keep it in place. Firm pairs might work, though. The suction cup feet do a pretty good job, but you have to make sure your surface is really dry and flat or it won't stay put quite as nicely and makes it a little harder to peel the apples. I did notice that depending on the size and shape of the apples, this peeler does miss some skin near the very top and bottom around the core. I use an apple corer/wedge slicer, and it just cuts this little bit out anyway, so it wasn't a big deal to me, but some people may find that they don't like this tiny strip of skin left on their apples. Overall, I highly recommend this, and actually did recommend it to the people I was camping with (though I think it spoke for itself as they watched me use it!) It's a really useful and easy-to-use device and definitely worth its small pricetag.

I was a bit wary of this product when I read about it, but it really does work extremely well. It's easy to clean, and, unless you have a really deformed apple, gets all the skin off except for a small bit at the opposite end you start. The core slicer that comes with it finishes off the job by slicing the apple into eight (I think its eight) pieces and separates the center with the seeds from them. Trust me, this unit eliminates chance of hurting yourself with a paring knife by peeling apples by hand, and it is fast. You can peel an apple in like 5 seconds, try doing that with a knife! The only thing I suggest is after you have peeled the apple, before you core it, cut the part of the apple off (top or bottom) that still has peeling on it before you core it. The reason is if you core it with peeling on the bottom the core slicer sticks on the bottom and you have trouble pulling the core out of the core slicer and getting the apple pieces off the bottom (the peeling holds them in place). Other than that (and I gave you the solution to the problem), this is a super great product. I have probably gone through a 100 pounds of apples, and I am still using the original little razor that comes with the unit. They give you a spare, so you should be set for a long time. Although it is just plastic (there is no metal other than the razor part), I have not had any problems with the plastic (if you drop it on a hard surface, it may break, depending on how it hits the floor), and I guess there is always the possibility of the handle or other part snapping. Oh, the handle just pops on a gear unit, so it can come off, but if you are careful that almost never happens. Postscript: Fast forward a few months--the unit came with an apple corer which just cracked (it's only plastic around the metal circle). It lasted three years, but replacing it I have found to be challenging. I thought it was a 99 cent item. Guess again--10 bucks or more for a "good" one (or so reviewers say). One more point on the peeler; you can remove the 4 Phillips screws on the bottom of the unit to remove the bottom plastic piece to clean inside, and you can lubricate the gears (I used a dry silicone spray) to make it as good as new. It's been so long since I bought it, I can't find the extra razor blade for it, but it still cuts the apple easily and quickly, assuming you can turn the little crank (it isn't hard to turn). Really, this tool is really amazing.

I admit it, for years I was too cheap to buy an apple peeler because I only make a few apple pies a year. I figured a paring knife did the job well enough for the amount of times I needed to peel them. Then this past fall came along and we had so many apple picking outings that I decided to make a lot of apple sauce. That's when I caved to the allure of another kitchen doohickey. All I can say is I should have caved sooner. This toy looking gadget peels the apples incredibly fast. The down side to this is that I am making more apple pies then ever before and my husband says he is getting fat. I decided on this one because of the reviews and the price, and I'm really glad I took a chance on it. The peeler comes with three blades so it should last a good long while. When it is done peeling, there is only a tiny bit of skin left near the very top and bottom. As you can see from the product picture the skin that comes off is wider than the ones done from typical peelers. I prefer the wider skin because they are tastier to eat and they are great for use in candied apple peels. The down side to this product is that the peeler looks like a child's toy and the core slicer that comes with it is on the cheap side and doesn't work well. I prefer to cut up the apple with a knife anyway, because I prefer large chunks of apples in my pies. The handle of the unit comes off so that the peeler stores in a smaller box. Don't forget to save the plastic caps that sit on the spikes and on the blades for safer storage. Have fun baking and feel free to leave a recipe in the comments section so I have an excuse to peel more apples, my kids fight over who gets to turn the handle so I'm always looking for another use for peeled apples. Edited to add: I uploaded a video of my oldest using the peeler, it's actually easier than he made it look - I think he was nervous being on camera. As you can see my middle guy is just insane - but in a good way.

I had this exact apple peeler but it got lost during my move and I suffered peeling my apples with a veggie peeler that took too long and too much apple with the peel…Until I was looking on Amazon for a new apple peeler when I discovered my old friend = This fantabulous peeler that is quicker than an electric peeler or any other; easy clean with the 1 touch slicer/corer making my life that much easier! To me and all who own this same item…This is the Roll’s Royce of apple peelers which I’m sure, if Johnny Appleseed had one, he wouldn’t have littered Apple peels, seeds& cores all over America plus, If Eve had one of these Apple peelers, and gave it to Adam, he would have found it so “a peeling,” he wouldn’t eat the apple and we’d all still be in Paradise!

First bought a steel one... though very durable and solid, I didn't like the "steel loop" that cuts the fruit. It digs in a little too much and removes a little too much meat for my preference. Plus the "corer" never worked for me, mainly because apples are rarely perfectly symmetric, so it just never worked. I returned that one, and purchased this one which is more of a "peeler" that I'm used to. It is plastic throughout, so not as "solid", but it is holding up more than fine! It has great suction to the granite counter, and releases easily enough. It peels nicely, leaves much more meat! It does leave a little at the top and bottoms I need to clean up with a knife. It's OK because I cut the apple into slices after peeling anyway. I have used the included slicer and it works great too. But most apples, again, are not symmetric, so the slicer sometimes doesn't hit the mark with the core. It's easier if I just cut them with a knife and I can clean up bruises, the tops and bottoms, and cut thinner slices for the kids. Overall, this slicer saves me several minutes of peeling! It's so quick, cutting an apple in like 5 seconds! I simply rinse the slicer after use and let it dry. Very little water gets "inside" the plastic when I rinse it (I don't submerge it), and it dries quickly, I give it a good shake if there is any inside. I never see any water inside it when I use it next time. Love it!

I've been using mine for a year and a half, almost daily as I chop apples for my oatmeal. I peel with this then use a corer to core and section the apple. Useful and quite slick. During the last month, I've noticed a decline in its function. The spring that keeps the blade pressed against the apple has weakened, so the blade skips unless I use a third hand (one on the crank, another holding the base) to apply a little pressure. Further, the blade has dulled and who knows where the extra blade went after a year and a half and two moves?! So I need a replacement peeler, and I'm going to try something else -- something hopefully with a higher customer rating, and it would be nice if the blades were replaceable. at this price, I'd say this peeler doesn't owe me anything -- I've gotten lots of utility and enough value for the expenditure -- but it's not one of those gizmos you'll be passing to your grandchildren -- it's got a limited life span. Update -- I looked over the other peelers and did not like any of them, primarily because they all seem to make use of the same configuration of blade that digs too deep. I feel I'm giving up too much apple (or potato) so I changed my mind about replacing this unit for the time being. I'm thinking perhaps the spring I mentioned is behaving badly, mostly because the blade has become dulled with much use -- so I'm going to try replacing the blades before I give up on this thing. On the manufacturer's web site, they list a customer service number where extra blades can be ordered. I'll try that and report back after I've had a chance to look at the results. I will say that the key advantage from my perspective of this peeler is that the blade is in a holder that limits the depth of cutting. The blade is wide so that it grabs more peel with each rotation, but with very little depth, saving most of the apple. If a new blade restores full functionality, I'm ready to give this little gadget five stars -- I really liked it that much when it was working. More to come . . .

I like my apples peeled, cored, and in large quantities. However, I've grown tired of manually peeling apples with a knife. So I decided to purchase and compare Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler with bonus core slicer AND Back to Basics Peel Away Apple Peeler w/ Suction Cup Base . Despite reading the positive reviews about the Starfrit peeler, I thought that it looked like a joke--a cheap toy, and that the Bake to Basics would blow it out of the water. I couldn't be more wrong. While the Back to Basics ("B2B") peeler feels more durable and "looks" more like an actual kitchen gadget, it is inferior to the Starfrit Peeler in all other ways. The Starfrit Peeler looks like a toy, but peels apples like a pro. First, out of the box, the B2B peeler required more assembly and I actually had to read the user manual to figure out how everything came together, the parts were adjusted, and the product was used. In contrast, the Starfrit peeler is basically in one piece out of the box... You just snap on the handle and go. Moreover, the Starfrit peeler is MUCH simpler to use (without having to consult directions) and does a wonderful job removing all of the apple's skin without wasting the apple's flesh. The Starfrit Peeler was equally proficient skinning both large and small apples. In contrast, the B2B peeler required a lot of tinkering and initially peeled far too much flesh off the apples while removing the skin. I also found that the B2B peeler only worked well on very large apples. If the apples weren't large enough, there wasn't enough pressure applied on the peeling blade, which failed to remove the skin. Finally, cleanup is much quicker with the Starfrit peeler, whereas the B2B peeler has many more components that need to be washed and rinsed. Ultimately, I was very unhappy with the B2B peeler and sent it back. Granted, I only tested it on apples (it supposedly is great for potatoes)--but I just wanted my apples peeled quickly, efficiently, and without much mess. I suppose it's also worth noting that the B2B peeler can also create "shoe laces" and spirals from the apple's flesh. But for my needs the Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler with bonus core slicer was the hands-down winner... Despite its goofy appearance. I've given Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler 4 stars because it says it does, and does it well. It's missing one star due to its toy-like appearance and because I have some doubts whether this will hold up over time.

This apple peeler works so well and is very easy to use and clean. We did about 50 apples in a very short time. I highly recommend it. I borrowed my girlfriends starfrit apple peeler which prompted me to purchase my own.

This is an excellent peeler which peels an apple in less than 2 seconds. Was a bit doubtful about getting this as have previously used an apple peeler/corer/slicer and didn't really know if the corer bit would work well....it does! So all in all very satisfied and would recommend

Estaba un poco inseguro antes de comprar, pero tras usarlo un par de veces, he quedado enamorado de este juguetito. Debo de decir que en realidad lo compré para que mi hija de cinco años me ayudara a preparar manzanas para hacer jugos, pero acabé enamorándome yo del producto, pues pela una manzana en tres segundos. Además que es tan sencillo de usar, que literalmente un niño de cinco años la puede usar sin problemas. Claro, bajo supervisión de un adulto. A pesar de que viene con dos navajas de repuesto, quisiera saber si las navajitas se pueden adquirir por separado, o qué sucede con el artefacto cuando se queda sin filo. ¿A la basura?
