## Description

Fill asphalt cracks easily and safely with Small Black Permanent Blacktop Crack Filler. This contractor-grade, thermo-plastic black rubber provides a permanent, patented, self-leveling seal for small asphalt cracks and joints. It's designed for use with a heat gun or propane torch and produces a 100% watertight seal.

Review: This is the best product for filling cracks I've used. And if the crack is too small to push in, just hold a couple foot length in one hand over the crack, heat the end with the torch, and move along the crack using the amount of material you need. Extremely easy to use and cost efficient.
Review: This is a great product but requires time and weather for a good job. it's very clean to use... I didn't even find a need for rubber gloves to keep my hands clean! I found it convenient for me to do a little each day rather than trying for a complete driveway repair in a single sitting. It can get tedious. Wind is a killer for torching, so I applied my Crack-Stix during the wee hours of the morning while it was a comfortable 75 F with calm wind. Otherwise, i had to keep the torch valve more open, using a lot more LP gas. These are "ropes" of sealant which may sometimes "snake" around when heat is first applied. The transparent non-stick wrapping will cause thermal bending stress when the torch first hits a spot, sometimes making the rope move out of the crack you want to fill. SOLUTION: Instead of dragging the rope straight out of the bucket, cut off a useable length (I prefer 3-5 ft) and with a single edge razor blade, slit the transparent wrap along the entire length. No need to remove it (since you can't... it's so sticky), it will burn away instantly with the heat of the torch. After slicing, the inner sticky black stuff will act as an adhesive to help stick sealant down to the crack. Sometimes, the crack is just too small for even the 1/4" product. Two ways to shrink your Crack-Stix diameter will make it go farther and make it easier to form to your squiggly crack: 1. Using the razor blade or another cutter, slice/split the rope length completely in half. This relieves all the snaking and also leaves a sticky surface which makes it much easier to apply to the driveway crack. I have a piece of tempered glass from a yard sale on my workbench, which provides a good surface for this action. It's easy to scrape clean with the same razor blade when finished. 1.(added) I finally settled on heavy aircraft type sheet metal shears for splitting Crack-Stix. Using a 3 foot length of rope, I only cut one or two inches at a time until it was fully split. Again, it's tedious but by split-cutting the half inch rope, you can cut the cost almost in half instead of buying the more expensive 1/4" product. Apply a little white lithium grease on the cutter's edge occasionally to reduce sticking. This also works to reduce the working diameter to 1/8" for those tiny cracks. 2. Another technique is to simply stretch the rope with constant pressure from each end. I find that three ft of rope at 75 F stretches nicely to 5 ft. I can do it by hand with my 5 ' wingspan, or put one end in my vise and pull the other end slowly with a rubber tipped clamp. Crack-Stix does have a "snap-back" memory, but the longer it sets stretched out the more likely it is to keep its new length. An inspection of the filled crack is a good idea when finished for the day. Since the newly melted sealant is glossy black, it may show reflections that look like holes in your work. Before wasting more LP gas, first look at the crack from both sides at a low angle to see if you have this optical illusion. Finally, you can level the "seams" of sealant by striking them off with a heavy duty scraper while it's still liquid. The scraper will pick up most of the excess which I then trickled into an unfilled crack using the torch to melt it off the tool. Be careful of drips and those pesky "hairs" of sealant which may form as it dries. They will stick to clothes and shoes. This process uses a significant amount of propane, so I highly recommend buying a refillable 1 lb. tank kit to reduce costs. Usually, I got about 2 hours of work from one tank.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: When can you drive on it?**
A: You can drive on it as soon as it is cooled, which should only take a few minutes. If you want to drive on it sooner, you could sprinkle a little sand on it.

**Q: Do cracks need to be fully dry before applying?**
A: Probably yes. Maybe if you use a torch, use it to dry the crack. The stuff has to melt and fill the crack, otherwise in just lays over the crack. Just from my experience, I did it last year and it looked good, but this year the cracks came back. Maybe smaller than originally, so sealer maybe be enough to fill them this time.

**Q: Can you use a heat gun instead of a torch?**
A: I don’t think a heat gun will get the sealer and pavement hot enough. I have been using a propane torch and it has been working quite well.

**Q: What temperature does it melt ?**
A: Not sure of the temperature- burning hot. You need to use a propane flame/torch so it melts into the crack.. Something like Hot Max 500G Big Max 500,000 BTU Propane Torch

This stuff is great. I used a hand torch, think small plumbing type. I placed the material in a crack by running a torch over it. That made the product malleable enough to hold its shape. Came behind that with a large weed torch to finish the job. Worked great. Now to see how long it lasts.
