There is a silicone gasket around the rim of the lid to prevent leaks, and it works...maybe too well. The mouthpiece cover is optional, but if you're taking your jar on-the-go, you'll definitely want to keep it on. My biggest complaint (hence the 4 stars) is that it can be difficult to remove because of the grip created between the lid and metal ring. That can pose a problem, especially for people who don't have Hulk-like hand strength. When this happens, the only way I've been able to remove the lid is by running it under hot water, and using a paper towel or grip to open it. All-in-all, it's an effective way to use mason jars without the risk of leaks or spills. I've kept mine in my handbag where it's been on it's side, and still no leaks. Based on its sealing ability, and travel-/eco-friendly aspects, I would repurchase them. They are quite expensive, but they work. ### ⭐⭐ Leaked day 1 *by J***E on Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2019* My friend has a few of these and loves them, so I bought a couple. I put one on a jar and put it on my bag, and it leaked all over, through the seal with the jar. The stopper worked fine. I checked the rim of the jar and the silicon gasket and they both were smooth and clean, so I screwed it on tight and tested, and it leaked within a few seconds.
