Best Hawk On the Market
Best Tomahawks I've Ever Owned I've owned and used hatchets and tomahawks for 40 years, first as a Scout in West Virginia in the 1960s, in martial arts training in the 1990s, and in Iraq in 2003. Seen and used several brands and types. The Estwing tomahawks are by far the best of the lot. I bought two from Amazon: one blue, one black. The blue one arrived with dull edges that were quickly sharpened. The black one arrived sharp. I bought these for self defense training and for my job as an international urban search and rescue team instructor. Small hatchets are very useful during collapsed structure rescue operations. The Estwing tomahawks have the usual sturdy Estwing steel handle, which is a huge advantage if you use your hawk hard and can't run to a hardware store to replace a broken wooden handle. The head is light weight, very responsive in the hand during movements, and does not generate too much momentum. Heavy heads generate large momentum, making the hawk difficult to control, slow to use, and a potential safety hazard. You won't have those problems with the Estwing tomahawks. For self defense in places where you can't bring a firearm, a tomahawk is a proven, devastating close combat weapon. Amazon sells books that can help you train correctly: Dwight McLemore's tomahawk fighting books provide techniques and training regimens, and Allan Eckert's historical novels and history books provide real world examples. Put one of the Estwing tomahawks in your vehicle emergency kit to chop ice when you're stuck, remove small trees blocking the road after a storm, or for emergency extractions. Overall, the best hawks I've ever owned and used.

Excellent, must have tomahawk if you've been in the market for one
I looked at other tomahawk brands primarily for a tool for my truck as well as use in the mountains. Here is a list of some fine aspects of this well made item: MADE IN USA! Considering the price, which is an excellent value for what you get, it's hard to actually believe that this hawk is made in the USA forged from a single piece of U.S. Steel. There are no welds, rivets or bolts throughout this full-tang tomahawk. I would gladly pay extra money for this item just for the fact that it was in the U.S. thereby supporting a job or two for other Americans. Additionally, Estwing cleverly used their shock absorbing grip handle on this tomahawk that are commonly seen on their standard work / carpentry handles. Other tomahawks do not have this which as a result transfers the strike vibration in to your hand. The tomahawk is well-balanced in the hand, comfortable to hold and comes in a matte black finish. Other reviewers have cited "quality control" issues because of a small chip in the paint or that the blade was dull on arrival. My blade came with a sharp edge but you can also put a good sharp edge on yours if this is an issue for you. All in all, this Estwing tomahawk is an EXCELLENT tool that far outpaces other products in its price category. To me, this is a must have tool. I will be buying another one for myself and more for gifts for others. Hope this review helps.

Unmatched Combination of Comfort, Durability, and Value!
The Estwing Black Eagle Tomahawk is a great piece of gear at a great price! I rate items in accordance with the price I paid, and $35 for this hawk is a great value. The cutting edge was sharp, the spike not so much, which is better for heavy duty puncturing jobs. The entire hawk is one piece of steel, so the head and handle are not going to separate or break apart unless very severely abused. This tool should outlast most other hawks. The grip is Estwing's shock absorbing rubber-like material and is identical to that used on millions of Estwing hammers. They get a lot of use for construction duty, and with Estwing's reputation, you know this hawk is gonna last. The head cover is black nylon, does its job, but is simple and otherwise unremarkable. My only real complaint is the handle prevents this tomahawk from being as flexible in how you grip and swing it. It is more difficult to choke up on this handle than my other tomahawks, but they aren't constructed this solidly, or cushioned from shock as well, so there are trade-offs. If comfort, durability, and value are what you are looking for, then the Estwing Black Eagle Tomahawk may be the very best option available. Enjoy!

Handles more like a sword than a tomahawk, high quality, great ergonomics
This thing is very well made the quality is 10/10. The edge could have a shallower angle to it but it will do fine as is, since it is supposed to be a tough item. I like the full tang construction a lot. Also, it handles more like a sword or machete than an axe/tomahawk. It feels very light, fast and nimble in the hand compared to my other tomahawks. The only thing I specifically do not like is the handle. While very utilitarian in nature, the handle does not match the aesthetic of the rest of the tomahawk at all. I do wish Estwing offered this without a handle, as a sort of finished blank. Then the buyer would be able to make their own handle, or wrap in paracord as many seem to do with knives. On the plus side, the handle means it is very comfortable to wield and will never slip out of your hand even when it is wet. Overall, I really like. If anyone has successfully removed the rubber handle please let me know how you did it without making a mess of it.

It feels like a long hammer in the hand
Very impressive hawk, especially for the price. It's not a thrower, its primarily a breaching tool. In that role it's fabulous (check out the You-tube videos). Although not designed as a fighting hawk, it would certainly be a devastating weapon for CQB. It feels like a long hammer in the hand, but the handle is very nice. It's flawlessly molded over the single slab of steel that is the hawk itself. The blade I received was decently sharp (tomahawk blades aren't supposed to be hair shaving sharp), but I put a bit more of an edge on it with my Worksharp. The spike is unsharpened but would obviously penetrate just about anything. It comes with a simple nylon sheath. I got a kydex sheath for it from Endless Mountain Supply which was just perfect, I strongly recommend it. This is a steal at the $50 Amazon price I paid for it. You could easily spend 9X that amount for a custom that might look prettier but probably wouldn't out-perform. Buy this hawk, you won't regret it, it'll sustain a lifetime of abuse.

Outstanding, durable and economical tomahawk1 7 stars!
A very well-designed and extremely durable item. The 27 ounce weight of this item EXTREMELY well-balanced; the actual balance point about a one-quarter of an inch south of the "G" in Estwing. This is the centerpoint of the item, and thus the rotation point if one were to throw this tomahawk. As with all Estwing tools, this item is built is built to last through rigorous use for decades. You'd need an acetylene cutting torch to do any damage to the metal of the tomahawk. The handle is bonded to the full tang handle and is equally durable. I've had an Estwing rigger's hatchet engineered precisely like this tomahawk for 40 years, and it always goes with me no matter where I go, so I expected that this item would be of similar outstanding quality. It is simply excelllent in quality and construction. I've seen similarly constructed tomahawks go for upwards of $400. Save your money and buy this tomahawk if you feel the need for an excellent CQB weapon.

Solid Piece of American Steel fit for a Viking...
I have had an Estwing framing hammer for about 20 years and loved it. I built two houses, two barns and remodeled an old house with it. Still one of my favorite tools. When I saw that Estwing offered a Tomahawk I jumped at the chance. Solid piece of American steel. Didn't have a razors edge when I got it but that's why I know how to sharpen, takes an edge easily. Nice heft and superior grip. Use caution, you could easily remove body parts with this thing, respect itand you will keep all your fingers... GET one for your B.O.B, under the seat of your vehicle (I tell people I use it for de-limbing firewood that I cut in the woods, partly true), in your tool kit, hanging on a hook in a closet, anywhere it makes you feel safe. Believe me, this thing is made to last forever. Your kids will be fighting over who gets the tomahawk when you pass over into Valhalla. Serious tool & a serious weapon.

Great for itโs intended purpose
This is a nice solid tool. It doesnโt compare to others in looks, but it more than makes up for it in practicality. You really get a lot of value for the price. Also, keep in mind, this is a tool built for specific purposes. If you want something that looks like a million bucks and can be thrown at stuff, then look elsewhere. If you want an actual tool, this is it. If you want a nice hatchet for camping, buy a hatchet. If you need a compact and light breaching tool, buy this.

If you need a two-headed axe - this is the one.
Got this for a friends birthday. It's a change from a bottle of liquor. He loved the tomahawk, no one got hurt. A win-win.

Awesome as usual for Estwing!
Got this to accompany my use of mattocks in the field as a landscaper, gardening. While mattocks do 90% or more of the work as my main tool, 10% or less is used with a hatchet cutting roots in the soil. That said, I found hatchets to be awkward and heavy for most roots, so i bought this tool to be a lighter alternative in the field. Plus the tipped side should offer as a pick which most of my mattocks have, but larger than my 12" long Japanese mattock, and smaller than my 5lb Husky mattock. Now if only Estwing could make a rugged mattocks I'd be in heaven!!! VERY RUGGED little 16" axe... I'm paining mine yellow to be seen easily on the ground... Like all Estwing tools I've bought, this one is gonna last...

Not the same as advertised and poor paint finish
The paint job is not the same as in the advertisement pic. I expected a high quality powder coat finish, Instead it's thin, inferior and comes delivered with paint chips already... It looks like a bad job from a kid with a cheap spray can. I've been using other Estwing products for many years and this one is not finished as well as them. It isn't the Estwing quality we've come to expect. If I were to buy another, I would get a black one rather. Don't bother spending extra money on the crappy "camo" finish.

You should
It's a great unit. I'm glad I have one. Came with a decent cover. Would recommend if you want a cool tomahawk.
