How do you know if it needs charging. Or how to charge

Most of the time I use it with its USB charging cable commented to a 5V 1A USB mains adapter. On the occasions when I have used it as a portable wireless speaker, I always recharge it afterwards using a 5V 1A USB mains adapter, and so I have never been in a position where it would not work because the battery needed recharging.
