Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) is still recovering from fighting a defining battle that saved Wessex for King Alfred (David Dawson) but which came at a huge personal price. Mourning for those he has lost, Uhtred begins a voyage north to reclaim his own fate: to avenge Earl Ragnar's death and recapture his ancestral lands. Alfred's conviction to create a united England is stronger than ever and he sets his sights on the wild lands of the north, which have fallen into chaos and rebellion. It is a dangerous time for Saxon and Dane alike but Alfred champions a new king—a Christian Dane—to unite the tribes. Uhtred is faced with questions of fate and duty as he continues to fight for the country of his birth, against the people of his upbringing. With a newfound love, it seems he may finally be on his chosen path but in times of rivalrous factions, bloodshed and shocking betrayal Uhtred is tested like never before.Bonus Content:Disc 3 - The Last Kingdom Season Two: The Story So FarReturn to The Last Kingdom: The Making of Season 2 Review: Excellent, more epic Uhtred - Uhtred is back, with more enemies than ever, and lots of political intrigue this time around. He has battles of a different kind as everyone suspects him, and just as what he wants most seems to be so close, his home of Bebbanburg, it all gets snatched away by treachery. He grows and matures in this season through his experiences; the irony is Alfred is the one who can't see it because he is so obsessed with his idea of what it is to be a good man. Uhtred saves people this season more than slays them, but there is still enough fighting for fans to keep things interesting. The whole issue with Mercia too is quite interesting and one Uhtred gets caught up in through no fault of his own. Everyone tries to manipulate him and he tries to sort truth from lies. He also keeps 2 big secrets from Alfred, when he could create chaos by revealing them. Athelwold is as smarmy as ever, so we can be pretty sure who the real traitor is, and yet once again, he changes his mind about the path he is taken, but not before a lot of good people make huge sacrifices. His boast about wearing a clean tunic for a change made me laugh-as if that is why he deserves to be king now. Great TV, ad now I am miserable because I have to wait a whole year for another season. One minor quibble-Hild. She was in serious battles last year and was like Joan of Arc in a nun's habit, so I am not sure why they made her all girlie with no ability to fight (with a sword) this time around when she was at Ethadun, and the idea sort of goes nowhere in the end and then she is not involved in the main action at all after a few shows even though she is such a strong character. But loved the new character additions Finan and Sihtric. Must see TV. Review: They play fine. The Last Kingdom (2014- ) is a great ... - The discs come in plastic snap cases. They play fine. The Last Kingdom (2014- ) is a great show, interesting story arc, colorful characters, and wonderful scenery. If you like The Vikings (2013- ) series you will probably like The Last Kingdom more. I like The Last Kingdom more than The Vikings for a couple of reasons. One of the reasons is the doubling of The Vikings disc prices after season three. Instead of releasing the entire fourth season in one plastic snap case they decided to split the season and release a volume one and a volume two so they could make twice as much money, like Outlander (2014- ) did when the season one discs were released. I hate that type of price gouging so I stopped buying The Vikings after season three and refused to buy Outlander. Outlander got smart and released the season two discs as a single season set instead of price gouging by splitting the season, but I’m still boycotting the show because of what they did when they released season one. If you like getting the best bang for your buck I suggest buying something else instead of encouraging The Vikings and Outlander and other shows to price gouge. Here are a few of the series I really enjoyed watching more than once: Band of Brothers (2001), Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Black Sails (2014-2017), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Lonesome Dove (1989), Lost (2004-2010), Merlin (2008-2012), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Rome (2005-2007), Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), Stargate: SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate: Atlantis (2004-2009), Star Trek The Original Series (1966-1969) and Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001). I didn’t list any contemporary series I’m following that don’t have an end date yet, not conducive to binge watching from beginning to finish, or the hundreds of other fantasy and science fiction shows I’ve watched. If you like reading try some of my favorite authors: Richard Adams, Palo Bacigulupi, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.

Plenty of medieval action, events and heroes
One of my favorite medieval drama series. Although Utred is fictionalized, the history surrounding the Saxons is mostly true to the record and the characters, acting and costumes are first rate.

Fantastic Series!
We first watched all the seasons on Netflix. My husband and I couldn't wait for each new season to start. We would watch it over and over. It's that good! I purchased each season so I can watch it anytime. It is an adult series. It's drama, some romance, a little humor, blood and gore (war). The Last Kingdom is worth seeing more than once!

Much more engrossing and well-made than Season One. Bravo! Can't wait for Season Three!
I honestly did not have particularly high hopes for this 'Season Two'. Season One was fairly well-done, I thought, and I did enjoy it, but, WOW, it was far outshone by Season Two in every way. I've read all of Cornwell's "Uhtred" books, and I've loved them all. That said, my sympathies go out to anyone who would try to put all of that into any kind of TV "series". To say the least, it is an immense story! But in Season Two, even with some necessary 'compressions' and a few omissions, the integrity of the overall story is rock-solid, believable, and thoroughly enjoyable. I was very surprised, and thoroughly delighted! Now, I despair at the thought that we may have to wait two long, dreadful years before there's a Season Three, but I certainly do hope there is one -- now, more than ever. I'll be eagerly awaiting it!

Good series but you need to enjoy history, not fantasy
This series, like Vikings does focus on historic elements with some creative storytelling. However be advised this series is a at least 4 seasons long now and one must really enjoy history to recall specific events and names from past seasons or re-watch them prior to taking in new episodes. While there are dramatic departs from history for costumes, and other aspects there is attention paid to other language details. This is not a fantasy show however, based off books set in historic periods.

This is the second season of Bernard Cornwell’ Last Kingdom series. It is also known as the Warrior’s Chronicles for those who have read the books. This season corresponds more or less to the novels “the Lords of the North” and “Sword Song”, although they are, just like in the previous season, a number of adaptations and liberties taken. Once again, one of the best features is the characterisation. Alexander Dreymon (Uthred) and David Dayson (King Alfred) are just as excellent as in the first season. My favourites however, remain the Dane characters, both those we have already seen during the first episodes (Ragnar Ragnarson and Kjartan being my top favourites) and the two brothers Eirik and Sigefrid. Also good is the performance put on by the actor playing the role of the weak, spineless, envious treacherous Gotfrid, the Christian Dane and puppet king of York put in place by Uthred, whom he betrays. The female characters – that of Hild, the former nun turned warrior and of Gisela, sister of Gotfrid and who becomes Uthred’s wife in particular – are just as good. One minor disappointment for me was the character of Heasten, who seems to be loosely inspired by the historical Viking warlord Hasting. His importance has been considerably toned down, even when compared to the novel, in order to make the brothers more prominent. While Season 2 keeps the rather impossible love story between Eirik and his captive, and it dramatic ending, the scene portraying Sigefrid’s maiming by Uther is quite deliberately different. This is perhaps one the main adaptations and differences from the novel. It is, of course, quite deliberate, since it allows a battle-enraged Sigfrid to lead the Second Great Army, fight at the head of his warriors and become berserk in pure Viking way. Needless to say, the visuals are quite stunning and effective. Another area of adaptations - I believe - are some of the features surrounding the demises of Kjartan and of his son. In both cases, however, they are mostly successful with a tendency to emphasise gore even more than in the novel. Another great five star effort.
