FRANCE, 1939. In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France...but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. As danger escalates, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive. Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gรคetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can...completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime. Review: Now I know the Nightingale! - Great read. Love it - captured the time period and was very interesting. Highly recommend. Review: My aunt loved this gift - Bought as a gift and they loved the book and the story. It was ship nice.

Enthralling but violence at end is too rough for gentle souls
Set in WWII France, this novel will hold your attention like few others. Sadly, the last few chapters contain the descriptions we've all read before about how awful the Nazi's treated those under their regime. I'd wanted to share this book with my elderly mother until I reached that section. It's a great story, but not for gentle spirits.

Beautiful story!
This story is both heart-wrenching, and beautiful. It is a worthwhile read that tells a different story than most about WWII.

A must read!!
I donโt know what to say about this exceptionally well written book. It makes you fall in love with these characters, you feel their pain and sorrow. You cry for them. You cheer them on wishing things could be different but they get through this, broken but stronger than what they were before. Excellent book.

The Print iss very small in paperback.
I have to return this book because the print is so small. I purchased the paperback version. Neither my husband nor I can read it. We love Kristin Hannah's other books, but publishing a paperback that is unreadable is contrary to attracting readers.
