Review: The best SSD M.2 SATA that you can buy for personal use. - Easy to install and the quality is great. It looks just like in the pictures and the compatibility is 10/10. It doesn't get too hot and it works faster than my old factory SSD M.2.
Review: A really good midrange SSD, if the price is right - Short version Pros: Has a DRAM Cache Decent performance and price for a midrange SSD 5-year Warranty Cons: Non-discounted pricing is atrocious 250G version is not the best deal Long Version As someone who frequently refurbishes old hardware others throw out, I tend to ignore the "midrange" of SSDs. Either I'll buy something ridiculously cheap (like that time when a 128G ADATA SU650 was at $16), or spend $40 for a 250G SSD is a bit steep, and the only time when the 250G version became a good deal was when one of my friends bought it at $45 each on somewhere that's not desertcart (which is a horrible price), but they accidentally shipped him two drives and they got to keep both.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this a sata drive or an m.2 drive? the picture is of an m.2 but the descriptions sounds like it's a sata drive.**
A: It is an m.2 drive with a sata 3 connection. Read this https://rog.asus.com/articles/product-news/ssd-guide-pci-express-m-2-msata-and-sata-express-the-differences-explained/ and make sure your mobo accepts 2280 m.2

**Q: I know it states pc as platform but does anyone know if this will work for a mac? my mac currently has a similar ssd. thanks**
A: I have installed WD Blue SSDs in my 2014 Mac Mini and in my 2015 21" iMac and have had no problem at all. The connectors are standard SATA, which is what both of my Macs had. So no adapters needed.

Disk Utility was able to format the drive as a GIUD partition and then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to the old hard drive over to the SSD in an external enclosure. CCC also made the SSD a bootable volume (it copied EVERYTHING ... OS, applications, and data files). Once the SSD had everything on it I took the precaution of setting System Preferences/Startup Drive to the SSD (while it was still in the external enclosure) to confirm that it would boot from that drive. I knew it was booting from the SSD because normally my computer would take just over 3 minutes to boot from the old drive. When I booted it from the external SSD it booted in 27 seconds. By the way, the external enclosure was a USB 3.0 enclosure. If you use a USB 2.0 enclosure it won't be as fast.

When I did the same thing to the Mac Mini the boot time went from just over 1 minutes with the old drive to 14.5 seconds booting from the SSD.

It's like having a brand new computer.

**Q: In the title i see a speed of sata iii 6 gb/s which is what my hard drive says for its speed. does that mean they will perform equally?**
A: "Sata 3, 6Gb/s" is not the speed of the drive itself, it is the speed of the lanes which all of the sata ports use, combined. It's somewhat like saying the top average speed of 10 sprinters is 15mph, so the track they are running on is a 150mph track. Mechanical hard drives usually top out at a transfer speed of 150Mb/s, due to the moving parts inside, and the time it takes to convert the data on the magnetic disk inside. An SSD on the other hand, has no moving parts. The data is stored on memory chips, meaning there is no time lost in mechanical exchange. Sata-based SSD's (including this one) typically top out at 550Mb/s transfer speeds. Be careful when you are buying a M.2 style SSD, as you have to make sure that your motherboard supports the one you are choosing. There are 2 different types. M.2 Sata 3, and M.2 PCIe. The M.2 Sata 3 uses the Sata data lanes, just as your hard drive does, while the M.2 PCIe style takes advantage of the faster transfer speeds of the PCIe data lanes, and transfers the data through the same lines that your graphics card uses. Those SSD's can go as high as 3500Mb/s transfer speeds. (All speeds mentioned are READ speeds. WRITE speeds tend to be less than the given read speed on any drive style.)

**Q: so this just straight up plugs into m2 slots what about the ears on the end? thinking about adding this as a 2nd m2 in my gaming rig**
A: If your rig is compatible with M.2 SATA III, it is just a matter of plugging it in and configuring the operating system to how you want to use the SSD. The Acronis software you can download from WD website does a solid job of copying any existing SSD contents to the new one and making it as the system bootable SSD.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The best SSD M.2 SATA that you can buy for personal use.
*by E***Z on September 7, 2025*

Easy to install and the quality is great. It looks just like in the pictures and the compatibility is 10/10. It doesn't get too hot and it works faster than my old factory SSD M.2.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A really good midrange SSD, if the price is right
*by O***S on May 26, 2020*

Short version Pros: Has a DRAM Cache Decent performance and price for a midrange SSD 5-year Warranty Cons: Non-discounted pricing is atrocious 250G version is not the best deal Long Version As someone who frequently refurbishes old hardware others throw out, I tend to ignore the "midrange" of SSDs. Either I'll buy something ridiculously cheap (like that time when a 128G ADATA SU650 was at $16), or spend <$50 on a 256G NVMe and throw in a budget 500G SSD when they dip under $50 or an old hard drive. Generally I would stay away from the more "premium" SSDs since smaller capacities aren't that good of a deal, and as a student I would prefer to spend less on hardware that I'm not going to use daily. If it is hardware that I either care about or something I use heavily, I'll probably just go for something from Samsung, Micron, or a SK Hynix Gold when Woot puts it on a discount again. This time however, I had a 2012 Macbook Air where the original drive it came with was really showing its age, especially an unresponsive keyboard during login, so I decided I would swap out the drive while doing some overdue maintenance, using a SSD adapter for the 2012 Macbook Air. Compared to the original drive (which I forgot to take a screenshot of the test results), the sequential read performed better, from ~430MB/s to ~490MB/s with little change for sequential write. However, the system was quite smoother (less stutter that was caused by the drive), and even though it doesn't hit the advertised speeds, I'm still very happy with the upgrade. Generally the WD Blue is actually an SSD that I would recommend my friends to buy if they're on a bit more of a budget, just because it's not outrageously priced, the warranty and performance is pretty good from past experience, and it has a DRAM cache which makes it excellent for a boot drive. It's just not something I would buy normally because of the use scenarios I have. Would I recommend it? Yes, as long as you're not paying for more than ~$70 for the 500G version and you're not considering the smaller capacities. >$40 for a 250G SSD is a bit steep, and the only time when the 250G version became a good deal was when one of my friends bought it at $45 each on somewhere that's not Amazon (which is a horrible price), but they accidentally shipped him two drives and they got to keep both.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good upgrade for my HP Envy x360 convertable
*by A***W on May 26, 2020*

My laptop came with a 128 GB SSD for Win 10 to run on. I was running out of room, so I upgraded to this 500 GB SSD. Very fair price for the memory, and I went with WD for the brand name rather than some unknown Chinese brand drive. I also purchased a QNINE M.2 to USB 3.0 Adapter to clone my original drive. I used Acronis True Image WD Edition to clone my drive. The software works fine. It says you must have on WD drive connected to the computer to use it. I had no trouble and my original drive is not a WD. My recovery partition was at the end of the 128 GB SSD. I tried other software first because of other reviews I had seen here for the WD drive cloning. Acronis was the only free solution I could find that would allow me to move that recovery partition to the end of the new 500 GB WD drive. I had to set the recovery partition end to the drive end and set the recovery partition size. Then I could make my system partition the maximum size, using the rest of the drive space. Once this was done, I opened up my laptop and swapped the drives. Powered up the laptop, and it just worked. Nothing else to it.
