It locks in multiple positions (from parallel to drive shaft to 90*) and can rotate from one side of the driver to the other. Turning that handle locks it in whatever position you find comfortable for the task at hand. It is not removable but if you lock it parallel to the drive shaft its like its not there. I'm a professional TV Installer and this is the most important drilling tool in my arsenal. I have killed probably 10 or more other brands/types of right angle drills and drill bit attachments, they always end up breaking. The chuck slides down, you slide in a hex drill bit, and lock it back in place, nice and smooth, and holds on to the bit well. I've been using this Milwaukee now for about four months with no signs of it breaking down. It's extremely well built.
