I bought the alert system for my mother who lives 65 miles away and I was concerned that if something happened I am too far away. The reasoning behind the lock box is so the Police /Paramedics could gain access to the house without knocking down the door. With the alert system you can converse with 911 and give them the code to gain access to the house.My mother had a slight issue changing the factory code but I was able to do it without an issue so if you are ordering for the elderly make sure you are available to help them with the new code. There are several on the market, and in the category of the ones that have a good shackle and easy to use (easy to manipulate the numbers, easy to open and place the key) this one is the cheapest one - which is why I always get this one. There are cheaper lockboxes, but they have dial combination which takes longer or a side compartment - which fits only 1 key.
