This magnetic pole detector is a great low-cost tool to view and identify the polarity of magnets, or to find out if an object is magnetic. Its simple yet durable construction means that this detector makes a great educational tool for teaching students about the properties of magnets and their magnetic fields. This magnetic pole detector consists of a bar magnet with its NORTH pole painted RED and its SOUTH pole painted BLUE. When held up to the south pole of a magnet, the red end of the indicator will point towards the magnet.

Review: This product perfectly tracks the pathway of a magnetic field from one pole of a magnet to another. It also works great for locating the poles on a piece of magnetite. I have a chunk of magnetite that has four poles, and it quickly finds and identifies them. It would have to be a very powerful magnet to identify the pole from a couple feet away. I have a 6" x 1" bar magnet, and it picks that up a foot away. But to show the magnetic field is parallel to the body of the bar magnet it needs to be about an inch away on the sides. I go past the end of the magnet a couple of inches and it definitely shows the field orientation. If the magnet in this sensor gets stuck to a bigger magnet, use care separating the two. Slide the sensors magnet to the edge - don't just yank it off! The product advertising does state that this device is 4.75" long, but I missed that. When I opened the package, I was expecting something a bit longer, but that's on me. The compact size does not detract from the operation at all, and it does make it easier to slip into a shirt pocket. This product is a delicate instrument and should be treated carefully. This is not a defect, pivoting a magnet in two axises requires some small parts. Treat it carefully and will reward you with years of service. Give it to careless kids and it won't last. I like it and will order a couple more. I think you will like it too.h

**Q: Is red north on this magnet? So when you test a magnet and the red side points towards it, that would be the south side of the magnet?**
A: Ignore some of the reviews where people give incorrect information and say this magnet is colored wrong. It's not colored wrong. If checking guitar humbuckers for example, red points at the south coil; blue points at the north coil. Opposites attract. If you point this unit towards the earth's north pole, the red end will point to the north, because the north pole is negative charged; If you point this unit towards the south pole, the blue end will point to the south, as the south pole is positively charged.

**Q: Can this be used to locate underground electrical wires?**
A: A pole detector shows the direction of a magnetic field, and would respond to slow changes in the field strength and direction.  Your underground wire would have to be carrying a direct current so as to generate a magnetic field with a constant field strength at any particular location.  The pole detector has too high an inertia to respond to a magnetic field created by an alternating current at 60 Hz, for example.  You need a metal detector if you are looking for underground wires.  Whether the wire(s) were carrying any current or none would be immaterial to a typical metal detector.

**Q: Would this be good to help with knowing where the new north and south poles would be after the upcoming Geo magnetic pole shift?**
A: No.  Read the item's description!  The CMS Magnetics pole detector is for distinguishing a magnet's north and south poles, not the location of the earth's magnetic poles.

**Q: Will this device reliably tell me the field orientation of brushless motor magnets?**
A: I don't know what your motor magnets consist of, but this simple, reliable device will indicate north and south poles on any permanent magnet.  If you are looking for a stable electromagnetic field, this will also suffice.  If you are looking for something while a motor is in motion, or for a changing magnetic field, then this may not be your answer and you are on your own.
