Car Science: An Under-the-Hood, Behind-the-Dash Look at How Cars Work

My 10-year-old grandson adores this book. He takes it on every car ride, and reads it at night before turning out the light. He always has something he wants to show me or talk about with his grandfather (who is an auto mechanic). The text is just the right amount to satisfy curiosity without being overwhelming. The pictures are great. Descriptions are clear, and the discussion of the history and development of engines is really interesting. I'd say that any kid 8-teens with an interest in cars would be thrilled to have this book.

Funny and clearly explained. Kid already loves it already and we keep revisiting it as his understanding broadens. Good pictures, graphics, text - lots of stuff to keep it entertaining.

my husband is a car enthusiast. he enjoys tinkering and rebuilding them. my nephew who is 4 has been obsessed with cars since he was old enough to talk. his other obsession is books and reading. my husband doesn't pay any attention to age appropriateness when it comes to toys and gifts for our nephews I guess because he assumes they are just as smart and curious as we were at their age?? anyway, he saw this book and bought it for my nephew. I know this book is intended for 7 years and up but my 4 year old nephew loves this book. there are plenty of pictures in the book and he does like those but he knows how to read and while he may not fully understand the entire concept yet of how engines and transmissions work he can follow along with the concepts loosely and he can explain it back to you. this is now his new favorite book.

Pretty advanced, written for a high schooler. Since the intended audience was a 4th grader, this will have to wait before being presented. I wanted something that could be used to segway into science studies (or at least an interest in what science existed.)

Purchased for my 8 yr old godson who loved it and read it cover to cover. He was already into cars and this book took his interest to another level. He now likes to " diagnose “ car problems and has further developed his knowledge of cars into how they work. Great gift!

My nine year old grandson loves cars and now he will learn about what the inside workings of a car are like.

The pictures are great and the descriptions are clear and can be easily comprehended by younger people and people who know nothing about cars. My grandson loves it. At 7 he can read some of it but lives to be read to as well. Good book.

My 4 year old loves cars. While this is typically a little advanced for a four year old, he is passionate about cars and has been making me read our car manuals anyway. Nice book.

I bought this book because I wanted to have a better understanding of how my car work. I tried to ask my brother, but got nowhere! I bought a book aimed at adults, but it was too technical- I needed something that started at the very beginning. This is a large and fills my lap, it has easy to read font and bright big pictures. I feel it would make a ideal presents for kids interested in cars. And is a good way for parents to explain how their own cars work to their kids! I book covers in brief all the science involves in the design and running of a car in simple language and uses pictures to explain processes clearly. Since reading the book (missed some pages) I now have a clearer understanding of the technology is use in my own car. And I am proud to say a better understanding when my car failed its MOT. It covers the development of cars from the beginning, how different fuels are manufactured from crude oil, how steering systems work. The pictures make it easy to understand - gears, steering system and how the engine works. Its full of car facts, makes physics accessible (the importance of forces and friction) It has a range of classic and modern cars, so something to appeal to all car lovers. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow' is what goes on in my 306 engine!! A fun read for all ages

I bought this for my 7 year old son to encourage his love for cars beyond just knowing models and top speeds. This book is laid out in a logical way that makes sense to a young mind, covering energy, combustion, car parts (pistons etc) and other elements of science for an inquiring mind. My son loves it and while he reads snippets of the text around loads of attention-grabbing graphics, I know he'll return to this book time and again over the next few years as his reading and comprehension improves and really get the most out of it as it is suitable for kids aged 8 to about 12. I'm so pleased we found a book that promotes science in a real world way and really speaks to my son's obsession with cars. (Plus he's really impressed it's written by the guy from Top Gear)
