The strength is greatest when the magnets are attached to the bottom of a horizontal surface and somewhat weaker if attached to a vertical surface. That said, That said, I have a couple of these attached to the side of a steel cabinet and they easily hold accessory bags weighing 25lbs. The one inside the cabinet attached to the top holds a full pack weighing in at just over 60lbs and shows no sign of wanting to release. I suppose they are supposed to be rated for a straight pull from some kind of heavy (thick) steel or iron plate. As such the actual holding on sheet metal would be considerably lower.
