I haven't worn with sweaters but it doesn't seem to catch on other clothing. I really don't have any exposed velcro. I hope this helps **Q: Can The length of thumb splint be shortened? The fabric/brace is too long and covers my fingernail.** A: This picture pretty much describes the actual brace. Fabric comes up to my nail and I can adjust so it hits just below my thumb nail. Splint is not made to be shortened. I like mine and will probably order a second brace for when mine gets sweaty and need a a good wash in the washing machine. **Q: Can this prevent the thumb from bending at all?** A: It is comfortable, it has one splint on the side that is positioned to prevent outward lateral movement of the thumb than downward/upward movement. I would call this "restrains" movement versus a hard prevent/stop movement. If one looks closely at the pics, the glove part of the brace goes down from the thumb, angling down to the wrist on the opposite side.
