    Not perfect, but getting there

*by T***A on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 1, 2018*

The first Palette+ I received had nothing but problems from the get-go. Almost every single time it cut filament it would jam. To their credit, the folks at Mosaic customer service helped me a lot, but they had this flaw: They never considered that the unit itself was defective and instead assumed that it was my lack of understanding that was causing the issue and kept referring me to the same unhelpful troubleshooting guides again and again. Well, after disassembling it about 50 times to clear jams, I noticed that several of the screws were starting to get stripped out. That's when I decided to return it and get a new one. Amazon made the whole experience of getting a new Palette+ a breeze. The new one had absolutely no issues jamming. So far I've used it on more than twenty complex models and not a single jam! Yay! I never did discover what exactly was wrong with the old one, but I suspect it was either the cutting mechanism making unclean cuts or hardware between the cutter and the splicer were slightly out of spec.I still had trouble with the splices though on the new one. Most of the time they were fine, but every now and then one would break in the extruder wasting a lot of time and material. I spent many hours tweaking the splicing process but still had this problem. Frequent firmware and Chroma updates helped improve the splices over time but I never could get to the point where 100% of my splices were good enough to survive the extruder. Today about 99% of them are ok, but that's not good enough when you have models that require hundreds of splices. I worked around this issue by adopting this rule: Don't print anything that requires more than 50 splices. I've found that reorienting or redesigning heavily spliced parts helps best and in some instances, dividing the model into more manageable sections and then gluing them together afterwards works. Before you purchase a Palette+, there are some shortcomings you should be aware about. First, you won't be able to use your entire print bed, at least for clean color transitions. On the average, about 40% of your bed will be used for a transition tower, a block of unused material that's required for the Palette+ to do it's thing. It can be a lot worse than that too (see the screenshot). A simple four-color snowman ornament with a transition tower that takes six times more material than what's used in the actual model! Second, you will waste about 40% of filament building this useless transition tower and all the time it takes to build it. So if you have larger models that take up more than 50% of your print bed that also need well-defined color transitions, then this is probably not going to work for you. And if your model + the transition tower is too big for your print bed? Instead of their software telling you this, you get a lot of cryptic error messages that don't make sense. The folks at Mosaic are fully aware about these shortcomings and are constantly making improvements to their firmware and Chroma software to reduce the time and material waste as much as possible. For example, recently they added the ability to put about 6% of the material wasted in the transition tower in the infill of your model instead.I know this review may seem overly critical, but please don't get me wrong. In the end, the Palette+ is a brilliant invention and Mosaic customer service is about as good as it gets.

    Not really a good idea.

The documentation is terrible. For this amount of money you get a short pamphlet. You go on line and the doc is written by people who are barely able to get the words out. It seems like they were afraid to explain anything.I tried to use this with my Flashforge Finder. It took a day of trying to guess at what the thing wanted in order to get it to partially work. I think in another few hours of trial and error, I'll have it calibrated. But when I tried using the software that came with the Flashforge to do the slicing for the calibration print, the Chroma software came up with some obscure bug that said the .gx file was corrupted. Great. I had to go in and edit the GX file by hand in order to fix this. It was very frustrating, and there is basically nothing online as a guide. There was a youtube video of some guy trying to help, but as usually with youtube videos, he took 20 minutes to say what needed to be said in 2.It uses a huge amount of filament. In trying to calibrate it, the magnet came off the tube as the filament pushed out the tube, that was another issue. That was causing additional problems in trying to calibrate it.Trying to reseat the tube holder on the printer feed caused the velcro attached to the printer to pull off. Meahwhile, the velcro attaching the scroll wheel to the side of the printer would not stick at all. The velcro is not a good plan. All in all, if I ever get this working right, it might be great. But it's taken me hours. I contacted support, and got what appeared to be bots. They were useless and non-responsive. As I read other customer reviews here, I see the thing has maintenance issues going forward. All this for an $800 item. Bad documentation, weak support, shoddy hardware issues. Wastes a lot of filament.I made a mistake in buying this, and would not suggest anyone else buy one. Maybe things will change if I can ever get the thing to work right, but just getting it this far has been a nightmare.Don't waste your money.

I never got it to work. My first unit arrived DOA out of the box (All black squares on the lcd) , The second unit arrived and would power on, but gave me many issues such as jamming in odd places, the SD card reader would not work most of the time. It did splice very well the filaments would join perfectly. But with all the other issues calibration was near impossible. On my first print that I got to try, it froze up and on reboot it died (all black squares again) I sent it back in for a refund from Amazon. I wanted it to work very much. I see others that have it working and what they do with it , is very cool. The Mosaic team is very good at communicating and offered to have me send the unit to them directly for repair, but after trying two of them. I just could not put more time into it now. I recommend anyone who buy this join the Facebook group for the Palette+ or even hop on there for a read to help you decide if this is for you.
