Review: It's nice to see that George Miller has mellowed in his old age - Slow, uneventful, boring, and subtle. These are some of the words you'd never hear from any sane person describing Mad Max 4. Before I dig deeper I should probably let you know that I'm a twenty year-old man who only recently watched the original Mad Max trilogy, so I don't have any nostalgia attached to them. The first Mad Max film is genuinely considered mediocre by most people apart from proud Aussies, and my opinion was pretty much the same. It didn't leave a particularly lasting impression. The Road Warrior, however, is generally considered as one of the greatest action movies of all time. I was expecting a full-on action fest (much like Fury Road) but unfortunately what I got was a ponderous seventy minutes involving Max titting about with a colony of people protecting fuel before ending with a spectacular car chase. I was quite disappointed and can name several older action films that are far better than The Road Warrior (Terminator 2 and Hard Boiled to name two). Beyond Thunderdome is generally considered as the worst of the lot but to my pleasant surprise I actually enjoyed this the most out of the trilogy! It might have something to do with me being a massive Tina Turner fan, but I thought there was more action and better characters than the other two films. After being largely underwhelmed by the Mad Max trilogy, I had my expectations for Fury Road lowered. Pretty much every review I've read has been astonishingly glowing with many hailing it as one of the best action films of all time, but didn't they say that about The Road Warrior? Fury Road is directed by the same George Miller, a man now in his seventies who hasn't directed an action film since Beyond Thunderdome and whose recent credits include Happy Feet and Babe: Pig in the City, Mad Max 4 is bound to be pretty weak, right? Wrong. Believe the hype. Mad Max: Fury Road is an incredible feat. I have no idea how George Miller managed to pull out something so utterly spectacular out of his bag. Fury Road is the best action film I've seen since The Raid and has some of the best stunt work since The Dark Knight Rises. In my opinion it leaves the original Mad Max trilogy lying face down in the dust. Fury Road is the great big throbbing war machine whilst the original trilogy is some old rusty bicycle. The first ten minutes of Fury Road is far better than anything from Mad Max 1-3 and the entire two hour film definitely contains far more action than the first three films put together. Fury Road is amazing. It opens with an epic monologue from our new Max, Tom Hardy. Mel Gibson never did anything for me as Max. In fact, the character of Max never did much for me. I much prefer Tom Hardy as Max. His accent may be as muddled as Stu's tan in Mrs. Doubtfire but I think he has much more of a presence than Mel Gibson ever did. His famous interceptor is destroyed within the first five minutes which is obviously symbolic. Just like James Bond getting shot in the opening of Skyfall and a TV exploding in the opening of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, the interceptor getting totalled represents a new era of Mad Max. George Miller has completely cut the ties from the original films and quite rightly so! We get thrown into a huge world and feel fully immersed. The imagery is huge and epic. It feels like something from Lord of the Rings with some powerful masked weirdo sitting on a giant cliff and spilling gallons of water to his loyal pale-painted followers. The villain in Fury Road is basically Aunty Entity on acid and curiously similar to Tom Hardy's very own Bane. He's a brilliantly memorable villain who has his very own breast milk farm and an army of seriously sexy wives. It occurred to me about three quarters of a way through the film that I actually cared about the characters on the screen, which I've never felt before during a Mad Max film (apart from Tina of course). The action still comes first, but there's still some character development to keep you interested in the thin plot. Some have complained that Charlize Theron's Furiosa character takes over from Max but that didn't bother me at all. I love strong female characters and Furiosa is definitely that! I cared about the clan of oddballs and their goal. Enough, anyway, to make me care about who is in the action. Talking of action. Fury Road's action sequences are every bit as amazing as you've heard. It's a total intense onslaught of revving action from start to finish. Within the first thirty minutes, we're plunged into a fiery sandstorm with a furious army of vehicles in hot pursuit. I sat there completely mesmerised by what I was watching. There's a jarring moment shortly afterwards where Max slowly awakes from a pile of sand and the slowness of the scene is so bloody jarring! Ninety minutes of Fury Road is just pure full-throttle action. It's amazingly executed with so little CGI and jaw-dropping stunt work. The final chase sequence is completely exhausting. Fury Road is eye popping. I felt like Toe Cutter before he collides into a lorry in Mad Max 1 for most of it. Let's just hope that the sequel will be like The Raid 2. It could easily get better by putting as much focus on character development and plot as well as the action. The Raid 2 did exactly that and produced one of the best films of the twenty first century. As it stands though, Fury Road is a gigantic, towering achievement. You can almost feel the testosterone sweating off the screen. The Fast and Furious franchise can well and truly sod off. Review: Mad meets Furious[a]. - A new Mad Max movie. For the uninitiated, Max is a former lawman in post apocalyptic Australia. He lost his family. Civilisation collapsed. He lives up to the former part of his name at times when it comes to his mental state. And he wanders the outback looking for purpose. Tom Hardy takes over the lead from Mel Gibson. A brief bit of opening expostion to tells you all that I mentioed in the above paragraph. And then the film gets going. Thus you don't need to have seen any of the three previous films in order to get into this. Whether it's a sequel or a reboot isn't made clear. And frankly doesn't really matter unless you're very picky. Max is captured by warriors from a bizarre cult with an even bizarre leader, and gets taken along for the ride when one woman, Imperator Furiosa [Charlize Theron] turns on their leader and makes a break for freedom with said leader's five wives. Determined to get them to a better place, she has a desperate journey across the wastes to find it. Max ends up along for the ride. And might just get involved.. Whether this will appeal to fans of the original will be a matter of opinion for them. But for anyone prepared to give it a chance, you are in for one heck of a ride. Because this is action filming as they used to it. Incredible car chase sequences with fights often going on during them. All done with stunt work. Scenes you really can't help but get caught up in and you can't take your eyes off. The visuals only add to this, since some of the cultists are bizarre in style in the extreme. It's all great imagination, superbly brought to the screen. But an action movie can't be nothing but action for all of it's running time. And this does succeed in those quieter moments, because it does great character work also. The five wives all have their moments. Characters have decent story arcs. There are plot developments and turns at the right points to keep the narrative moving. And a very memorable final scene. Charlize Theron is the stand out acting wise, really creating a woman of hidden depths with great determination. Tom Hardy is an effective Max. Although he does rather play second fiddle to Furiosa. And you might just struggle, unless you make an effort, to hear a lot of his dialogue. Same goes for some of the baddies during the action sequences. But when you've got such an eye catching, heart stopping, gripping, brilliantly imagined bit of action, who cares? It's a great ride. It's well worth five stars. The disc begins with a single advert, which can be skipped via the next button the dvd remote. It has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English, Castilian Spanish, Hindi. Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Greek, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish. The only extras are three short deleted scenes. None of them run longer than a couple of minutes. They can only be watched individually. Some have unfinished visual effects. But they're all worth a look.

Great film, spectacular blu ray
This review is not a review about the film ( which I personally loved) there are plenty of reviews out there for that. What this review concerns itself with is the blu ray and what we get for our money What we do get is the following. We do have a UV copy with the blu ray, always good to have. There are six featurettes on the disc as follows. Maximum Fury- Filming Fury Road (28 mins). An excellent look at the film, the thought processes behind it and how it was shot. This gave great insight into how it came together visually. Mad Max- Fury on Four Wheels (22 mins). A look at all the vehicles of the film abdhow the designs of them came about. As they are so important to the film, this was great to learn more about. The Road Warriors: Max & Furiosa (11 mins). Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron talk about there characters and experiences as does the director George Miller .Insightful The tools of the Wasteland (14 mins) .Seeing some of the props. Good to see but limited as outside the vehicles, there were not that many. The Five Wives- So shiny, So Chrome (8 mins). A look at the supporting characters of the film. Fury Road- Crash & Smash (4 mins) A look at an action sequence as it was being filmed. Nice to have but not necessary There are three deleted scenes. None of them go very long and none added anything to the story. I can see why they were cut What the disc does not contain There is no directors commentary .This I must admit is a tad disappointing .The featurettes do make up for this somewhat, but still would have been good to have. All in all an incredible blu ray release

I can't give it a perfect 5 star rating as it was a solid a*/90% film,
I was born the same year the last Mad Max film hit the cinemas, but i watched them on VHS... It's a pretty good film, It's a shame i missed it at the cinema, but watching it at home with decent headphone on and the volume turned way up was good fun too. The amazing practical effects are great, and really highlight the one time they obviously had to use CG for a particular shot and make you appreciate the quality and complexity of what is essentially a 2 hour chase through a desert. The film itself leaves a lot of questions unanswered and if you want a rant about it, or about the plot-holes, and confusion as to where this fits in with the previous 3 films. Check out Doug Walker AKA. The Nostalgia Critic or CinemaSins on Youtube. That being said, having avoided reviews etc. [until after i watched it] outside of it being mentioned on various podcasts I watch. I did wonder about many of the random things that were put in there seemingly just to be awesome. The film unquestionably has both style and substance. Flows relatively nicely and despite Tom Hardy saying he's Max etc. this could be a "NEW" Max, in a new universe, with plenty of room to grow. -context- My experience with previous Mad Max Films was a strange one, my dad had a VHS box set, but 1 and 2 were on the same VHS and Thunderdome was on the 2nd VHS. As Thunderdome was a 15, my dad allowed me to watch some films i wasn't quite old enough for around about the time i was in double digits and 12 ratings were being introduced in the UK. I think his reasoning were there were certain films in his collection that if a 12 rating had been available at the time, then they'd have been 12's not 15's and many of the special effects were sufficiently dated [in the films he deemed appropriate] that there's very little suspension of disbelief. [and he did actively sensor some scenes in some films] I must have seen the first Mad Max all the way through, at least once, but the only thing that i really remember about it was the fact his family got killed, there's possibly some corruption involved somewhere, and "good cop" Max goes "Mad"... TBH i also seem to remember the main bad-guy was left cuffed to a deathtrap with a saw that was only capable of freeing him by cutting his own limb off [Like in the film "Saw"] and i think that was the first time i'd ever seen anything like that in a film. Again i Must have seen Road Warrior at least the same amount of times, but the characters, costume and action are all far more memorable to me. So i watched Thunderdome first and really go into this Campy OTT semi-austrialian world, and with a still relatively young max leaving those he had freed and heading out across the wilderness, i was hoping this one would pick up some time after that... ...Which it may do... but possibly not before taking a detour through Crazy town. Yes it's Campy, Cliched and OTT in places, and i can't help but make comparisons to the "Borderlands" series of video-games. It's not perfect, and it's not pointless, it's not unenjoyable for more than just the Epic spectacle either. Everything just seemed a lot more serious than Thunderdome. -end of context- As a photographer who has and does occasionally work on films, i really appreciate great cinematography and camera work, and in a film done this well it is difficult not to watch that element almost as much as the action on the screen. There's enough left open or unexplained that unless there's a sequel or a much longer directors cut coming, there is plenty of manoeuvrability as to where they go from here, or where they decide this fits in the timeline of the previous 3. -conclusion- I can't give it a perfect 5 star rating as it was a solid a*/90% film, the nearest film experience i can liken it to is "Dredd": A semi-independent reboot/reimagining, high octane, not particularly heavy on the dialogue, plot or character development, but immersive, impressive, visually stunning and well paced.

Mad Max: Fury Road Action Movie Done right
Tom Hardy kinda stars as Mad Max in a practical effect montage. The story is about a commander (Furiosa) who betrays a war lord called Immortan Joe by taking his mistresses, which causes the pursuit and action to get started. Max is caught up in the middle of this. I enjoyed the action of it and the practical effects set it apart from all the cgi films and effects that came out this year in films such as: Jurassic World, The Avengers Age of Ultron. It is fast paced and explosive. The story works, as it's mroe of a trust, survival and redemption story. If I have to find some negatives about the film, I would say that if you want a compelling story this is not the film for you. Pros: -Awesome Action -Lots of times when you think the "hero" has escaped but then gets caught, and the other way around -Film looks beautiful -Plenty of "Money shots" -Practical effects done right -Good to watch with some friends -Quick to get going -One of the best action movies to come out this year Cons: -Not much in terms of a compelling story (Then again why would you want that in a Mad Max film) -Not really a story about Max (Close to the original though so not that much of a bad thing) -You are either going to like it or you will not. Mad Max: Fury Road I would recommend just as it had me on the edge of my seat for the action, the cool visuals and plenty to enjoy.

Brilliant. The second best Mad Max film in the world.
What a beauty this is, we've waited a long old time for George Miller to knock out another Mad Max flick and it was worth the wait. Every second of it. Minimal backstory is given but you don't need to know a great deal to get on board with this. The environment and key players are established quickly then it's onto the action with the film barely pausing for breath over the two hour run time. The plot is streamlined to perfection - we meet Immortan Joe, a tyrannical war lord ruling over his people from his lofty Citadel. A small plucky band escape the citadel and set out across the desert with Joe and his minions in hot pursuit. Max finds himself dumped unwittingly in the midst of these strangers problems (again). The film essentially becomes one long chase with our boy along for the ride. And what a ride it is, a high octane blast that just keeps coming at you with increasingly inventive vehicular violence. I think the best way to approach it is to lean back and let the carnage wash over you. Tom Hardy has little to say but plenty to do and he's excellent in the lead role (he has to be to make this work without Mad Mel). Nicholas Hoult puts in a suitably manic turn and Charlize Theron is class as the awesomely named Imperator Furiosa who brings some added steel and a fair amount of heart to proceedings. There's plenty more characters and solid performances to go around including a strong female presence. Visually it all looks stunning and Millers put together another fine piece of work here. It's almost as good as The Road Warrior. Almost.

Magnificent Madness
I am a huge fan of the original Mad Max films and when I discovered George Miller was making another one I was fairly excited. But nothing could have prepared me for watching it on IMAX 3D. Holy hell. I can't remember the last time I went to the cinema and was completely blown away by a film. The stuntwork is incredible. The film looks stunning. Every scene is beautifully shot. As per other max films, dialogue is kept to a minimum and you are not spoonfed answers, you don't know how Imperator Furiosa lost her arm, you are not told who Max continually sees in his flashbacks. I should imagine this will be frustrating for many viewers. It is a chase movie. If you are not a fan of that, don't watch this. Also in keeping with the older movies, Max is the main character who reluctantly involves himself with others. Imperator Furiosa is the protagonist this time and Max finds himself working with her to escape Immortan Joe, a warlord. The reasons I loved this film are possibly the reasons others may not like it - it could be like marmite! You either love it or hate it. I have re watched it many times and each time it gets better. Definately the best film I have seen for years. An action masterpiece.

An action movie milestone
I was blown away by this. Anyone who thinks it deserves one star must be as insane as Max. The critics have been unanimous their praise and I am definitely inclined to agree. This is a movie I can watch again and again because there is always something I didn't notice the last time. It is not perfect. The term embarrassment of riches comes to mind and the never-ending onslaught of action at the expense of story can become wearing. But compare this to Jurassic World or Age Of Ultron: it's not some CGI-laden bore that insults it's audience, it's the most exciting movie you'll see for years. And most of the action was done FOR REAL. This is an amazing cinematic feat, an astonishing, exhausting trip for the eyes and ears. It is an incredibly well sustained two hour climax to a movie that is perhaps missing the story that led to it, which some viewers may balk at. But George Miller's understanding of the language of film is so complete here, you could turn the sound down and still understand what is happening. I can't recommend it enough.

A fresh and welcome take on a fine franchize
This is a fine adventure. The Mad Max universe is well represented, and the wreckage is excellent even if the digital effects are kind of obvious in some places. The action comes at a fast pace, making plot developments a little hard to follow sometimes, but who cares? We're there for the ride, and Charlize Theron, right? Besides...it's a great excuse to watch it again, and maybe again. Oh, yeah...Tom Hardy's pretty good too. I do hope there is a follow-up to this story line.
