Cat Mate Water Fountain - It’s Brilliant!!
We had two issues. Firstly, my cat hated the taste of water from metal bowls. I initially didn't realise this was the reason she drank from puddles and pots, that she found in the garden. One day I decided to change the bowl to a china one. Problem solved...she began drinking from the china bowl. This was successful until we took on a little stray cat. The second issue was he had been used to drinking out of a small stream. Consequently, when presented with a china water bowl, containing still water, he proceeded to tap the water with his paw to make it move like the stream. This made the water in the bowl dirty, a wet floor and my cat not wanting to go anywhere near it! I was spending alot of my time changing dirty water and mopping up the mess! I am delighted to say my problems have been resolved by this Cat Mate water fountain. It’s brilliant. I set it up, remembering to remove the plastic covering from the filter before assembling. (The filters should be replaced monthly. Amazon sell them.) I placed the fountain in the utility room where we have a stone floor. A good test for the motor noise. I filled it with water to the max line and plugged it in. The cord is long, so no worries there. Inside the unit is a dial for the motor speed. Our’s came set to half way. I left it set there. I switched the unit on in the presence of both cats. They sat starring at it as though a mouse might come running out from the top! The motor really is very quiet. I have good hearing and if I bend down and get close enough to the motor, I can just hear a very faint hum. Make sure it does not touch other objects because they will carry the sound. I left the china water bowl in the utility room next to the Cat Mate water fountain. After about 2 hours, both cats were drinking from their new fountain, ignoring their old bowl. It has been a complete success. No more splashing about in the water to make it move, no more wet floor and no more dirty water. Just fresh, clean water all the time. I just need to top up the water every day, wash the plastic parts once a week and replace the filter monthly. Easy! 😃 The cats love it and I’m happy! Since writing this review, I have made a useful discovery with the filters. I went on eBay and bought 500g of loose charcoal pellets that are identical to the 20g of wet charcoal in the filters. If you prize open the lid, wash the filter fabric, replace the 20g of wet charcoal and carefully replace the filter lid, you will have an all singing and dancing filter for the cost of about 15p in total. I wondered how necessary it is to change the filter every 4 weeks, so did a bit of research. I learnt that carbon is a medium for bacteria, as well as removing chlorine. The carbon breaks down the bacteria and removes it. After 4 weeks the carbon no longer works and can hold onto the bacteria. Having discovered this and not wanting to risk my cats' health, I have decided to keep changing the carbon every 4 weeks. Just to be on the safe side. Nothing lost but a bit of time and 15p with my eBay purchased charcoal! Remember also that the pump cannot function properly with a dirty, clogged filter. The filter will restrict water flow towards the pump and you may be under the false impression that your pump is packing up - when actually all is needed is a new/clean filter. Some reviewers have commented on the unit becoming noisy. I've noticed this happens when cat hair gets stuck against the inlet part of the pump. Just remove it and it will be virtually silent again. In August 2019 the unit suddenly stopped working! I removed the end cover of the pump, where the propeller is located. The propeller was motionless. I turned it ever so slightly and it fired into action! Not sure why it stopped, everything was clean inside the pump. Needless to say, all good again now. If your pump does pack up, you can purchase another one, separately from Amazon. They cost about £10. It's June 2026 and with the afore mentioned maintenance, the unit is still as good as new. Hope this helps. It is a great product. 👍🏻

Good purchase; so far so good
Update after almost 2 years, original review and update below: It's still going. All the original parts, original pump etc. Still great. Still 5 stars. The scratches are a little worse now. We might consider re-ordering, but as long as it's clean the kitties don't care that they've scratched the edges after 2 years of constant use. I'm suprised the pump is still going. We make sure to clean the pump out every few months, maybe that's helped keep the stress on it down. We've noticed no change in performance really and the filters are changed not quite as frequently as recommended but they aren't too expensive for the official ones either. ----Update after 12 months: original review below So I updated my review of the filters we buy to go in this and I thought I'd update to reflect my opinion one year on. The plastic has become scratched a fair bit around the edges; where our cats like to play with the water edge; unless made from metal this was bound to happen. But no functionality has been lost. We perform less than regular cleaning and maintenance and have encountered no issues. The pump is still going. The cats find it a bit too easy to unplug the fountain by pulling cables but the resolution was to tape the cables to the underside in the copious amounts of space in the gaps. All in all; considering the price paid; I'd say this is still a really amazing purchase and don't regret it one bit. Still happy with function, appearance, noise, capacity and the cats are too; which is the important thing! 5 stars remains in place for me. The refill cartridges we use are: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Replacement-Cartridges-Mate-Pet-Fountain/dp/B0025YT83E ---Original review--- This was a purchase we made after the kittens insisted on flipping over their water bowl and splashing it everywhere. We thought, perhaps, they couldn't see the water level too well. So we investigated water fountains. After research; this fountain came out on top for value, size, and most importantly noise. Soon after setting up, the kitties rushed over to investigate. After 24 hours of getting used to it, where they splashed a little and investigated, we noticed they were drinking from it too. Now they still splash some, but I'd say they splash less and the capacity is so high (2L) that we don't worry so much about that now. The power is 2.8VA so on medium power I'd guess 2W usage. The pump runs with a low hum that doesn't bother the cats. Customisable pump power is quite useful. Min Max fill markers on unobtrusive and don't attract the kittens attention (sometimes they like to play with small markers on things to see what they are) We've been impressed so far. for the money it's very nice and quiet. And if the power goes; the water is available at the bottom still for them!

My cats are less than impressed than I am!
I bought this product from Amazon after seeing a couple in use and then researching different models online. After one of my cats had a recurrence of FLUTD, my vet advised me to get a drinking fountain, and while my other three cats do love their water (and one even seems to get so much pleasure from just drinking and drinking) the cat who should be drinking most, doesn't. He sometimes drinks water from the bath tap if you turn it on to a trickle, so I thought getting a fountain would be perfect solution, since cats do seem to prefer running or trickling water. After deciding on this particular model over others, mainly due to the brilliant reviews and the fact most people seemed to think it was quiet, and also the design which would allow several cats to drink at the same time from the different areas, I ordered it - and also a pack of filters from a different supplier on Amazon. I received the fountain and the separate filters within 48 hours of my order, which impressed me. I set the fountain up (after washing all the parts). It is extremely easy to set up, but you must put the filter in the right way round. Incidently, a word about filters: I've read reviews saying people just run these under the tap, but while this may get rid of pet hairs etc. the reason for the filters is that they absorb impurities, and washing a filter under the tap will not wash these away. After setting it up, I was really impressed by the lack of noise it makes. The only noise is the soft sound of trickling as the water runs down the chute from the top level to the bottom. You need to make sure you fill it to the right level or it won't work properly. Once filled, it starts running immediately. My cats were not immediately drawn to it, as some adverts suggest, and didn't notice it at first. however, they all came for a look and while they were all initially quite curious, only two of them have used it for its intended purpose, and then the novelty wore off. The cat it was originally bought for hasn't drunk from it at all to my knowledge. One cat just played with it, dipping his paw in and out and trying to catch the water! I am going to have one last attempt to get them to use it by removing all but one of their water bowls, the idea being if they are thirsty they will use the fountain. However, as I work long shifts and don't get home until 10pm three days out of six, I can't risk leaving them without a source of water that they will actually use, particularly in this warm weather. I'll give it another week then pass it onto a friend who is thinking of getting one! My verdict: great product but my cats might just be too fussy! I would definitely still recommend it as the idea is ingenious, and it really is unobtrusive and quiet. It's also a lot smaller than you might expect, but in my view this is a plus, as it means you can put it pretty much anywhere you want. Cats apparently prefer their water away from their food, so the small size of this product means it doesn't really take up much more room than a couple of water bowls.

My cats love this!
My cats love this! They really like the running water, and the various levels mean several cats can drink from it at once. Easy to clean when needed, good quality and value for money! Holds a decent capacity of water, so doesnt need topping up all the time. The only downside, and it's more to do with the water quality in my area than the water fountain, is that limescale does build up inside the pump over time, which does effect the pump power. I eventually had to buy a replacement pump after a couple of years, but the part wasn't expensive, and the original pump had been going solidly for those 2 years!

Perfect as always
This really is fab and in my opinion, a great price! It really is as quiet as others have said and my Cat's love it. It produces a constant stream of clean filtered water which stays cold without warming up to room temperature as the day goes on - beats their old daily bowl of water hands down! Also just the right size without taking up too much space in my small Kitchen, it's perfect! UPDATE: Having bought a few of these over the years, I can honestly say that these are the best. I have replaced an old for new at around two year intervals, not because I have to but because I am a fussy so and so and choose to. This is because after around this time, the red lettering starts to fade and limescale starts to build up around the adapter making it look really old and worn. I keep the parts clean by regularly dismantling and soaking in a white vinegar solution but after a while, it gets stained even though it is scrubbed, I just don't like the look of it. I was pleased to find that my recently purchased unit comes with white embossed lettering instead of the red, the newer version of the 3 stage filter and it came with a small cleaning brush which is so handy. I think this one will stay for a bit longer this time! I can't imagine every buying a different model because this one is perfect and remains silent throughout it's lifespan. The only time it becomes a little noisy is when the pump needs cleaning - which is so easy to do. The unit (not the pump) is also dishwasher safe on an average setting which is a blessing because the dishwasher removes any water marks and the beginnings of light limescale - and it is very light due to the water being filtered of course. I clean my unit weekly and the pump every couple of months. I place the top part of the unit on the top rack and the heavier bottom on the bottom. I really can't recommend Cat Mate enough.

Easily tipped over, not suitable for chaotic cats.
One of my cats repeatedly knocked it over, spilling water everywhere. Very unsteady. My other 2 cats did enjoy it and it worked nicely until the 3rd cat pulled it over. Good for normal cats.

Sturdy, easy to clean
Stops my Persian cat from knocking over the water bowl daily, and means they always have fresh water. Both choose to drink out of the top, fresh from the pump! It's easy to take apart and clean, and replacement filters are cheap

UK plug only!!!
The fountain came with a UK plug, which is not mentioned clearly in the listing. As I'm in the EU, I'll have to return it.
